1929 Martin 0-21 Vintage Acoustic Guitar Pre-War Adirondack Spruce, Brazilian
Up for sale, a 1929 Martin 0-21 in excellent condition, featuring the deep, resonant tone that one expects from a Pre-War Martin. A definitive model from a builder that needs no introduction, this 0-21 was crafted only a few years after Martin began purposefully bracing their instruments for steel strings, and the result is a truly inspiring instrument. Perhaps the most hallowed acoustic tone wood combination of all time, this guitar features solid Brazilian rosewood back and sides, with a solid Adirondack spruce top and one piece Honduran mahogany neck. This guitar is an absolute cannon in terms of projection, with sweet, complex overtones and a sound that has Martin's signature clarity and warmth. The string to string balance is truly remarkable, and the instrument is extremely forgiving and balanced sounding when fingerpicking. The entire instrument vibrates in your lap when you strike a chord with authority, and it's as lively and stunning sounding a Martin as we've ever had in our shop.
Currently strung with phosphor bronze 11-50 strings, this guitar has received all the maintenance due a Martin of this vintage, with a professional neck reset, reseated bridge base, and both a new hand carved bone nut and compensated saddle.
The neck has a quintessential '20s Martin V shaped profile with fairly slender shoulders and a fretboard width of 1 7/8" at the nut. The ebony fretboard features 20 original bar frets, with 12 clear of the body, and small slotted diamond inlays at frets 5, 7, and 9. The fretboard itself is in fantastic shape, with no notable wear into the board itself, and the original frets have been leveled and crowned with plenty of life and height left. On the slotted headstock, the original open back strip tuners are intact with clean and original oval buttons and sparingly little wear on the tuner plates. The Brazilian rosewood headstock veneer is in truly remarkable shape, with the original, glossy nitro lacquer finish. The C.F. Martin & Co name is cleanly imprinted into the back of the headstock per factory practices in this era of production.
The Adirondack top has the rich reddish golden color indicative of red spruce, with multi-ply binding and a herringbone rosette. The original pyramid bridge sits flush with the top on all edges, and there is only minimal, natural deflection of the top behind the bridge. The new compensated bone saddle has room for future adjustment, and the original bridge pins are present. Internally, all of the original tapered braces are structurally sound and intact, and the Martin name is stamped into the center seam brace on the back. On the neck heel, the original stamped serial number places this instrument very early in Martin's production numbers for 1929.
Cosmetically, the top is in excellent shape with zero cracks. There is moderate pick wear on both sides of the soundhole, although more prominently on the treble side as highlighted in the included photos. There is light finish overspray around the edges of the bridge base from when it was reseated, and various other small marks of wear, particularly on the bass side lower bout of the top extending to the waist. The solid Brazilian rosewood bookmatched back is also crack-free, with a gorgeous herringbone center seam and only a few assorted dings.
The sides show a few professionally repaired cracks, the most notable of which is south of the endpin where the two sides meet, extending roughly 9" parallel to the grain. This crack extended through the heel block, and is now structurally sound having been glued and lightly oversprayed, with one cleat on the inside bass side of the body as well. There is a smaller crack on the back running parallel to the center seam on the treble side for 4" which also has light overspray and has been professionally addressed. A pair of extremely faint and tight 1" cracks are also present on the sides on the extremes of the lower bout, and these cracks are all representative of one incident during the guitar's lifetime, as the instrument has clearly been very well cared for over the decades.
This Pre-War Martin 0-21 was produced in only the third year where Martin was purposefully bracing their instruments for steel strings, and this guitar exemplifies everything serious gigging and studio musicians love about early Martin tone.
A modern hardshell case is included.
