1959 Fender Precision Bass Guitar - 100% Original with case & strap P-Bass
Fender 1959 Precision Bass #42995 with Brazilian rosewood 'slab' fingerboard in superb condition with original case, chrome guards and strap. This guitar plays beautifully as is demonstrated by the lovely wear of varnish from the back of the 'D' profile neck - it's been played often and that's the best sign that a guitar is a good one! I purchased the bass in 1999 via Rudy's Music Stop in New York (formerly on 48th St when it was Music Row) from the original owner - G.J Brown. Sr. at a Texas guitar fair. My purchase receipt from Rudy's will be supplied with the guitar. I worked on 48th St and shopped long and hard, comparing many Fender basses and year models before settling on this spectacular guitar - it honestly outshone any other basses I played at that time and I went on to own a range of P bass and Jazz bass models from the pre and post CBS era (up to the early 70's). This was the last guitar I held onto - for obvious reasons. During my ownership it has been played gently in my home and a couple of times in the studio - but hardly at all over the last 10 years as I switched to keyboards. The nut and frets are in AMAZING shape as the guitar has only ever been strung with flat-wound strings and the chrome guards never removed - so no slap bass or hard rock bashing of the frets or nut - EVER. Suffice to say, they are in basically 'time machine' condition as the photos show.
All hardware 100% original - the tuners, string tree, nut and frets, pickups, pots and capacitor, as well as the nitrocellulose pickguard and thumbrest. None of its internal solder joints have ever been broken or resoldered. The pot codes are 137-945 which indicates they were made in the 45th week of 1959 (see photos). The input jack is original, the bridge, its nickel-plated metal cover, the knobs, the body finish and neck finish - all original. I opted not to remove the neck as it is unnecessary to confirm the age of the guitar and I don't want to risk damaging it. The neck is unmarked with a date - consistent with early - mid '59 Fender guitars and basses. This is allegedly due to a Fender employee scribbling profanity in the neck cavity instead of dates. As stated on Antiques Roadshow, among other sources, the dates were discontinued through 1959 while Leo Fender decided how to tackle the issue and were eventually brought back in late 1959 - 1960 and replaced with blue stamps from 1962 onwards.Note that the instrument shows normal signs of use and wear including chips, scratches, scrapes, scuffs, marks, dings, finish checking and chipping finish, belt buckle “rash” on the back. There is beautiful hand-wear on the back of the neck from playing and overall it's in fantastic shape as is the headstock with the 'spaghetti' logo as photographed. There are a few holes covered over where the original owner moved the thumbrest around and he also blacked out a few scratches.
Local inspection is welcome as is local pickup on sale. The bass will be professionally packed and shipped worldwide with insurance - the buyer will pay actual shipping costs and any duties involved, I make nothing from the shipping and pass on the exact cost. Something to note for Australian buyers - the materials used in this guitar are have been banned for export/import (from the US and Australia under CITES.) without costly permits that take up to 5 months to procure. If you are planning on buying a bass and having it shipped from the U.S. you may wish to take the risk of seisure by customs into account.
Happy Bidding!
