1959 Gretsch Single Anniversary 6125 Vintage Guitar Smoke Green FilterTron w/ohc

Up for sale, a 1959 Gretsch Single Anniversary model 6125 in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Finished in original two-tone Smoke Green, and featuring a single "Patent Applied For" Filter'Tron humbucker, this Gretsch is simple, sleek, and incredibly fun to play. Also worth mentioning up front is that this Gretsch is 100% original aside from a hand-carved bone nut! A resonant and lively instrument with the hallowed trestle bracing, there's a sustain and feedback control that this Gretsch offers which few can match. As a company whose vintage hollowbody output can be somewhat haphazard (there are great vintage Gretsch guitars, and some that are just OK), we can confidently say that this is one of the best Gretsch instruments we've ever had here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar. The neck is a particularly hefty baseball bat C shape, the tone is dazzling and clear, and the dynamic response of the guitar is excellent. Weighing in at 7lbs 6oz, the guitar is easy on the back and feels solid and substantial while still being quite light and well balanced on a strap. Setup and dialed in with 11-50 roundwound strings, this Gretsch boasts low, comfortable action and surprising tonal versatility.
The neck features the aforementioned baseball bat C shaped profile, and this neck is delightfully chunky and robust, with generous shoulders that fill the palm. This profile is still quite manageable for smaller hands, and very easy to navigate for quick lead lines, while camping out in the "cowboy chord" area is its own simple joy. The original slender frets are intact and in great shape overall, with moderate wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-3, and faint flattening of the fret crowns until fret 5, but further up the neck the frets show virtually no wear. The neck is very straight, the frets have well rounded crowns, and the guitar plays easily in all registers with no buzzing or dead spots. the rosewood fretboard also sports Gretsch's classic thumbnail pearloid inlays. The nut measures a full 1 3/4" in width, and the original plastic part has been replaced with a hand-caved piece of bone that retains ideal string spacing, while also improving the sustain and overall tonal response of the instrument. On the headstock, the original chrome open-back Waverly tuning machines are intact, and turn quite smoothly. The "Gretsch" name is inlayed in pearloid on the face of the headstock, which also retains the stock truss rod cover and chrome Anniversary badge.
All of the electronics work as they should, with a single Master Volume knob as well as a three-way tone switch, which is bypassed in the center. The up and down positions on the switch engage two separate tone caps, each with their own unique, darker voicing, both of which are surprisingly usable and great for mellowing out "ice pick" in an amp or thickening up your favorite fuzz. The original hardware is all accounted for, with the stock chrome trapeze tailpiece, "Space Control" bridge, deep green pickguard, strap buttons, and chrome "G" Gretsch knob. The "Patent Applied For" Gretsch Filter'Tron retains its original plastic ring and has a chrome top that still has plenty of shine, although the sides of the pickup are heavily oxidized. Also worth noting is the rare trestle bracing that this body features, which in most model years was reserved for the top-tier 6120 models and other flagship Gretsch instruments. This bracing effectively enables a hollowbody guitar to respond more like a solidbody, while preserving classic hollowbody tone. That is, it offers notably greater sustain and control over feedback due to the increased mass (more wood), the increased dampening of the top, and the much more substantial coupling of the top to the back when compared to Gretsch more readily used "sound post" bracing.
Cosmetically, there are few finishes quite as classic and stately as Gretsch's two-tone Smoke Green, and this guitar has an excellent and unfaded nitro lacquer finish sporting that particular color duo. The lightly aged white binding on the top and back of the body is stunningly clean and intact, with no signs of deterioration. There's some moderate buckle rash central to the back of the guitar, which reaches the bare wood in a quarter sized area, as well as some scuffs around the feet of the bridge, and light lacquer checking on the top. There is also some light finish chipping at the neck heel, and one small scuff near the waist on the side of the body along the back binding, but no serious or structural wear of any kind! This Gretsch is ready for stage and studio use, and offers some of the most desirable features of any Gretsch model, with an early "Patent Applied For" Filter'Tron humbucker and trestle bracing.
The original hardshell case is included.
