1960 National Glenwood Deluxe Vintage Electric Guitar Valco USA Supro Bigsby B5
Up for sale, a 1960 National Glenwood Deluxe in excellent condition and in perfect working order. One of the most upscale and feature rich guitars ever concocted by National's parent company Valco at their headquarters in Chicago, the Glenwood name was traditionally reserved for Nationals top of the line model. With a proprietary pickup and tone switching system along with a factory installed Bigsby B5 vibrato unit and corresponding Cibson ABR-1 bridge, this Glenwood Deluxe covers a ton of sonic territory. With a solid, weight relieved maple body, carved maple top, and maple neck, there's a bright and crisp quality to the guitar's acoustic tone, and the instrument weighs in at 9lbs 14oz.
While the pickup and tone switching options are extensive on this National, they aren't needlessly complex, and the wiring does allow for some very unique tones and textures. On the treble side of the body, the guitar features a Master Volume control and three-way "Tone Switch," which essentially switches between the pickups in a conventional fashion, albeit with a couple unique surprises. The bass side of the body has three independent Volume controls and three two-way toggles for navigating the myriad of sounds. The pickups are a pair of Valco's proprietary single coils with large ceramic bar magnets, for a very rich and punchy sound.
In the colloquial "bridge" position on the Tone Switch, the bridge pickup is selected, with the two-way switch engaging a tone cap to brighten things up further if desired for extra twang and snap. The middle position two-way switch toggles between the bridge and neck pickups, once again with a Volume control for this particular setting. The neck position is a unique circuit for just the neck pickup with a darker set of tone caps for extra thick and bass heavy tonalities (think early Tele/Broadcaster neck position or Jazzmaster Rhythm Circuit for tones in a similar vein). Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Glenwood Deluxe is strung with fresh 10-46 strings and has comfortable, low action.
The maple neck has a chunky and well rounded C shaped profile that definitely qualifies for "baseball bat" status, with generous shoulders and a full, substantial feel. The bound Brazilian rosewood fretboard features the Glenwood's signature pearloid block inlays inset with abalone diamonds, and the original slender fretwire is intact as well. These frets conceivably retain their full, original height, with moderate wear in the first position, lighter grooves beneath the plain strings and a bit of flattening of the fret crowns until roughly the 9th fret, and virtually no wear further up the board. The guitar plays well in all registers with no buzzing or dead spots and the neck is very straight. The general feel and playability of this guitar is very Cibson-esque, with a 24 3/4" scale length and a nut width that measures 1 11/16". The nut is a newer hand carved piece of bone that matches the original quite well, and the "Gumby" headstock features a raised silver script "National" logo. The tuners are a set of original nickel Grover Rotomatics which turn smoothly and hold pitch as they should with Patent Pending gear housings.
All of the electronics work as they should and are exhaustively described above, with original knobs, switches, and untouched solder joints. The Bigsby B5 vibrato tailpiece is original and works quite smoothly for dives and surfy shimmies. The bridge is a newer lightly relic'd ABR-1 Cibson reissue bridge that matches the look of the stock bridge and sits on the original Brazilian rosewood floating base. The top has a subtle German carve along the edges, bound in thick cream plastic and featuring a new black plastic backplate crafted by Pickguardian to perfectly match the original color and shape.
Cosmetically, this National is structurally sound and in impressive shape, with the only truly notable wear being two tight and professionally repaired cracks extending from the bolt-on neck heel. Glued, clamped, and not posing an issue structurally or otherwise, these cracks are extremely common on National electrics of the era, given the tension that the single bolt sees. Other light wear includes some small dings and nicks on the neck profile and rounded back edges of the body, and the nitro lacquer is 100% original with no touchups or overspray.
The original rectangular case with thatched gray exterior and white end caps is included and in great shape with working latches and the original handle.
