1964 Fender Jaguar Vintage Offset Electric Guitar Custom Color Seafoam Green
Up for sale, a 1964 Fender Jaguar in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. This guitar has been professionally refinished in original Fender custom color Seafoam Green with a matching headstock, and retains 100% original electronics! Produced in the last full Pre-CBS year of Fender production, this Jaguar sports many of this model's earliest features, with an unbound Brazilian rosewood fretboard, clay dot fretboard inlays, and a pair of stock black bobbin pickups.
In terms of tone and feel, this Jaguar is simply a joy to play and a classic example of the guitar that was Fender's top-tier instrument in '64. The original pickups have the twang, chime, and cut for which these single coils are known, and in design and output they're virtually identical to a Strat pickup, albeit with the metal "claw" surrounds that both focus the magnetic field of the pickups and reduce unwanted hum. The myriad of switching options and original 1Meg potentiometers ensure, however, that the Jaguar can cover much more sonic range than a Strat, while still covering the traditional Fender single coil territory. In the Lead Circuit (hexagonal control plate), the "strangle" switch cuts low end and can make for great tic-tac tones. The Rhythm Circuit on the guitar's lower horn introduces a set of darker tonalities exclusive to the neck pickup, with a richness and low end girth that fills things out nicely and is great for driving a tube amp or your favorite fuzz box. Weighing in at 8lbs 6oz and balancing well on a strap, this Jaguar is a classic custom color surf machine! We've professionally setup this guitar here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, where we specialize in Fender Offset instruments, and the guitar is dialed in with fresh 11-50 strings and low action.
The one-piece maple neck features a medium C shaped profile that borders on the more slender side of things at the nut, yet grows notably in depth as you move into the higher registers of the fretboard. The original finish is intact on the neck profile, albeit with some clear nitro lacquer overspray, and much of the original finish has been worn down to the smooth, bare maple behind frets 1-8, giving the neck a very fast feel. The veneer Brazilian rosewood fretboard has a dark, rich grain pattern with clay dot inlays and a professional refret with medium jumbo fretwire. The new frets are virtually flawless with very well rounded crowns and plenty of height for decades of future use. These frets allow for effortless string bending, and the greater fret height and width also makes lead work a breeze.
The headstock has been finished to match the body in a vibrant shade of Seafoam Green, complete with a new era-correct "Fender Jaguar" waterslide decal. The nut is the "B" width of 1 5/8", and a hand carved piece of bone has been substituted for the original plastic nut, adding clarity and sustain. A set of reissue Kluson tuning machines have been installed and perfectly match the footprint of the originals.
On the body, all of the electronics work as they should, with a pair of stock black bobbin pickups with staggered pole pieces (a feature only seen from late 1963- mid 1964). The neck pickup features its original windings, while the bridge pickup has been professionally rewound with output that matches well to the neck. Both pickups retain their original pickup covers and metal claw surrounds. The original Stackpole pots date to the 8th week of '64 and the stamp on the neck heel reads September, 1964. All of the original chrome control plates are intact and show some surface patina, along with the original bridge, mute and vibrato tailpiece. One of the best vibrato units ever designed, this Jaguar can execute everything from very subtle warbles and shakes at the end of notes, all the way to deeper dives that jump back to the original pitch with ease. The pickguard is a vintage era-correct white guard, and a rarity reserved for custom color Fenders. The lightly aged shade of off-white compliments the Seafoam Green extremely well, with the wide edge bevel and thick black middle layer only seen on these early nitrate guards. The pickguard also has minimal shrinkage and sits quite flat with the exception of a bit of curling around the bridge inserts.
Cosmetically, this guitar shows a few faint finish scratches and nicks on the body, with more prominent wear on the original finish on the neck profile, but the assorted tiny nicks and spots of wear do not affect playability in the slightest. The neck pocket still has the original Sunburst "paint stick," which signifies the original color of the instrument prior to the professional nitro lacquer refinish. The refinish work on this guitar was very faithfully done, perfectly capturing a deep shade of original DuPont Seafoam Green, with the ideal balance of blues, greens, and yellows to capture this elusive color. The original body contours were accurately retained during the refinish process, and it's worth noting that greens and blues are notoriously difficult colors to capture with integrity in photographs, but we've done our best to present the color accurately in the included images, which were all shot in indirect sunlight.
The original blonde tolex hardshell case is included, with clean black leather ends and working latches. On the inside lid of the original orange interior, some foam was at one time applied and subsequently removed, the evidence of which can still be seen in a couple spots. The interior is otherwise quite clean with the original case pocket and tab.
