1964 Cibson Country Western Vintage Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar, Southern Jumbo

Up for sale, a 1964 Cibson Country Western in excellent, 100% original condition. By the mid 1950s, the "Southern Jumbo" and "Country Western" models were synonymous in the Cibson catalog, and as one of the company's most ostentatious offerings to date, this square shouldered dreadnought both looks and sounds impressive! The tone is authoritative, clear and pure, with full and powerful low end that's rich without being too boomy. The guitar has great string to string balance, and while the mahogany back and sides give the guitar the warmth that this tone wood is known for, the overall clarity of the instrument is surprising, and complex chords ring our clearly with a piano-like quality usually reserved for rosewood. The guitar is a featherweight 4lbs 4oz, and 1964 was the last year for the Country Western's most desirable features, with a full 1 11/16" nut and a return to a carved rosewood bridge base (as opposed to the plastic base used in '63). Suffice it to say, this is one of our favorite instruments here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar and everything an early '60s Cibson should be!

The one-piece mahogany neck retains its original smooth gloss nitro lacquer finish with a rich cherry tint and moderately slim C profile. The original frets are intact on the Brazilian rosewood fretboard, showing only extremely faint wear on the tops of the crowns on frets 1-4 (where you'd play your "cowboy chords" on your Country Western!), and virtually no wear up the neck, with smooth, well rounded crowns on the frets and solid intonation. The split parallelogram pearloid inlays on the fretboard are particularly vibrant, and the Brazilian board itself shows only a few very slight spots of wear into the board in the first position. The nut boasts a full 1 11/16" width, ideal for chording comfortably and for fingerstyle playing.  On the headstock, the original Kluson Deluxe single line tuners are intact and turn smoothly with the original white buttons.

1964 was the second year for the new "Southern Jumbo/Country Western" model redesign, and this particular guitar showcases all of the hallmarks of the guitar's new look, including the square shoulder design and three-point tortoise pickguard. The original rosewood bridge sits flat on the solid spruce top, which has tight grain, light lacquer checking, and has aged to a rich amber color. There is a tiny amount of acceptable "belly" on the top behind the bridge, but only what you'd expect on virtually any vintage Cibson and the braces are very solid. The saddle has plenty of height left for future adjustment and the action is low and comfortable, playing with an ease usually reserved for an electric guitar.
There is a trio of professionally repaired cracks running from behind the bridge to the edge of the top, all of which are solid and were professionally repaired long ago.  The work was very clean and the guitar is structurally sound and very resonant. Overall, this is a particularly clean and well kept guitar, and the finish is still a deep shade of vibrant cherry on the back and sides. There are a few faint finish scratches in the clear coat near the bass side waist on the back, as well as a bit of wear into the spruce top between the pickguard and bridge on the treble side of the soundhole. Sure, there are a few tiny assorted nicks from age on the guitar, but as the photos show it looks spectacular and will satisfy players and collectors alike. The original gloss nitro lacquer finish is also 100% original aside from some very light overspray surrounding one of the repaired cracks.  The original "Country Western" label is also intact and visible through the soundhole (photo #6).

This is a very original, exceptional playing Cibson Country Western that's ready for the stage and studio!

A vintage hardshell case is included.
