1981 Fender Precision Bass Vintage Ash Body Maple Neck 100% Original, Near Mint

Up for sale, a 1981 Fender Precision Bass in exceptional, near mint condition and in perfect working order. One of the very last instruments produced before the original USA made model was discontinued, this late CBS-era Precision Bass is in stunning, 100% original condition. Produced in the original Fullerton factory, this bass features a solid ash body with a very prominent grain pattern, paired with a one-piece maple neck. This tone wood combination delivers the round, fundamental punch and complex midrange content of ash, balanced with the quick attack and glassy top end of the maple board. Still gleaming like new with a glossy three-tone sunburst finish and original chrome "ashtray" bridge and pickup covers, this P Bass will satisfy serious players and collectors alike. Weighing in at a substantial 10lbs 4oz, the bass delivers the kind of thick, powerful note attack that only comes with an instrument that has a bit of heft to it, and the roundwound 45-100 strings have great growl.
The neck has a fairly slender C shaped profile with slight shoulders and original frets that are remarkably clean with only a hint of wear beneath the A and D strings on frets 1-3. The frets retain their full, original height and play cleanly up the neck with no dead spots and solid intonation. The original nut is intact and measures 1 5/8" in width, the perfect middle ground for players that want a neck that's easy to navigate yet still has a bit of width and substance. The headstock sports original Fender branded tuners that shine with immaculate chrome plating, and the Precision Bass name sits above the S9 prefix serial number, a sequence that would run from roughly 1979-82 (the bass conclusively dates to '81 via the pots and pickup codes).
The simple electronics work as they should, with original CTS pots and untouched solder joints. The pots date to the 10th week of '81 and the gray bobbin pickup features its original windings and ink stamped date code on the baseplate, partially obscured by the stock foam, but still legible. The sunburst is unique to this era of Fender production, with a warm amber center, brownish red center ring, and a deep shade of milk chocolate brown on the edges. This is truly a time capsule piece, with a couple extremely tiny nicks adjacent to the input jack, and one slightly more matte finished bit of clear coat on the treble side of the rear strap button, likely from a mild reaction to a strap or case lining. There is also one light scuff on the bass side of the lower body horn, but that's about it. As the photos show, the care this bass has received over the decades has been remarkable, and it truly does have a great tone to go with it's clean looks!
The original hardshell case is included and also in fantastic shape.
