I’ve retired from lutherie, but have been making copies of various tools and jigs I developed.  Several versions of this guide are on the market.  This one offers a choice of two tuner spacings (1 ½” or 1 3/8”) and is also among the simplest.  You line it up where you want the tuners installed (detailed instructions are included), clamp it down and drill the holes.  The half-inch thick aluminum will guide your drill bit, keeping it vertical and positioned exactly where you want the tuners to go. 

Without a drill press, it’s difficult to keep all six holes perpendicular and precisely placed.   Even with a drill press, marking and drilling accurately can be challenging.  With this guide, you decide where to locate the tuners, clamp the guide down and drill, and then insert the provided dowel pins to hold everything firmly in place as you continue.  All the holes will be accurately positioned and perpendicular.  You don’t need a drill press.  A hand drill with a 3/8” bit, two or three clamps and you’re good to go. That’s it.  It’s harder to describe the process than to do it. The tool…and its operation…has the virtue of simplicity.

I machine each one of these guides myself on a small vertical mill from half-inch thick 6018 Aluminum; no CNC, computers, automation, employees, etc.   The holes are .377 inches in diameter and deeply countersunk.  That makes them easy to access with your drill and there is little chance of damaging the bit as would be the case with steel.  With reasonable care, the template should allow drilling many dozens of pegheads before showing significant wear.
