Acoustic guitar suction cup  strap button

TECHNOFRET  now offer a method  to fit a strap pin to the upper bout of your acoustic guitar which does not involve any invasive drilling into the neck heel.
The custom manufactured suction cup shown in the picture is 65mm ( 2 1/2" ) in diameter, and provides an extremely strong grip which will not release accidentally or inadvertently, but which at the same time can easily be peeled off simply by the insertion of a fingernail at the edge, and lifting off carefully. The large diameter and the flexibility of the cup means that it will conform to the rounded contour of the upper bout.
The cup is supplied fitted with a strong leather double thong which simply loops through the slotted hole in the end of your guitar strap. No knotting is necessary ... you simply feed the already- knotted end through the strap, and loop the suction cup between the thongs, as shown below.

The two questions which will immediately spring to the  mind of any prospective user are:

A: is it strong enough ... will it fall off when I least expect it and send my guitar crashing to the floor?
and
B: will the PVC cause any chemical reaction which will result in damage to my guitar?
Both of which are very sensible  and valid questions.
To answer the first question, the suction between the cup and the guitar finish is far more than enough to support the weight of the guitar, and the leather thong is likewise more than strong enough to withstand the exertions of the most heavy handed player. When applying the cup to the desired location on the guitar, the preferred technique is to press down on the center stem, and then gently expel the air by moving your fingertip in ever increasing circles. When this is done, the cup will adhere to the substrate with a tenacity which will resist any direct pull ... rest assured that it will never release inadvertently.
You will see that there will still be tiny pockets of air left, and you will notice that the extreme perimeter of the cup does not adhere to the substrate. This is intentional in the design. Some types of suction cup have a design  in which the perimeter edge adheres to the substrate and can cause a circular marking ... this is something which we have eliminated in the design of the TECHNOFRET suction cup strap pin... there is no sharp edge contact to leave any marks, and intentional removal of the cup is also facilitated.
To answer the second question, this was something which very much concerned us when first getting this project started. It is well documented that in the past, when vinyl and nitrocellulose lacquer came into prolonged contact, the plasticizers in the vinyl would leach out and react adversely with the lacquer. Fortunately, advances in technology have made it possible to stabilize these plasticizers, and  after ascertaining from the manufacturers that they could in fact produce a flexible transparent PVC in which the plasticizers were totally stabilised, the first samples were tested out on three high-end guitars, a Santa Cruz OO, a Bourgeois OM, and a handbuilt Circa OM by John Slobod.
All three guitars are finished in nitrocellulose lacquer. The sample cups were left continuously attached  to each guitar , with occasional removal and immediate replacement to ascertain if there was any adverse reaction between the PVC and the lacquer. At the time of listing, the cups have been attached to the guitars for over three months, with no signs whatsoever of any reaction.
It would therefore seem safe to state with some degree of certainty that these suction cups are in fact chemically inert, and totally safe. It also goes without saying that the cups are easily removed between performances, if you don't want to leave them on your guitar continuously.
It is worth noting that Taylor guitars have a polyester finish which renders them totally impervious to any chemical reaction with vinyl, even the old style vinyls which did in fact have an adverse reaction with nitrocellulose lacquer.
So, if you want to play your guitar using a strap, but have shrunk from having a hole drilled in it for a strap button, this is your answer.
You can of course tie the strap to the headstock, but that is far from ideal ... for most people it disturbs the balance of the guitar, impedes the fretting in the lower frets, and many people would consider that it also looks extremely uncool.
The simple, affordable alternative to the drilled hole ...the TECHNOFRET suction cup strap button.
