The Red Rascal

Our new top-of-the-line 5 String

by CertainBass

Identical to the recording bass Jay DeMarcus of Rascal Flatts got from us!

This is the exact bass we made for Jay DeMarcus of Rascal Flatts.  Of all of our models, this bass is one of the finest basses that come out of here.  We made our reputation on block inlay Jazzes, and you will be hard-pressed to find a better one at any price.  We're not joking.  Not only Jay knows where to get the best 5 string Jazz style bass, Tad Kinchla of Blues Traveler, the Grammy-winning Mark Peterson (Casandra Wilson, Ben E. King, James Blood Ulmer and many others) and Jon Keenan of the Los Angeles Master Works Chorale all play our basses.  They can afford anything they want, and they choose CertainBass.  What Tad, Jay and I have in common is our love for the Fender early 70's Jazz bass.  So imagine that in a 5 string.  That's what these are.  5 string basses for guys who normally play 4 string basses, but need a 5.

"Wanted to tell you I played the bass you made for me today in the studio, awesome axe!!!! Thank you so much, what a great feeling, great sounding instrument!!! Love it."  Jay DeMarcus May 9, 2014

First, get to know me a little.  I want to show you that as a bassist myself, I am very demanding on a bass.  Please take a look:    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-y5SDZVcVQ    I play darn near every note on a bass throughout a performance so I make sure every note on all the basses that come out of here plays well.  I make every bass as if it's going to be mine.  This is a higher standard than most bass makers most of who play very little if at all.  Please take a look at  CertainBass.com  to get to know me a little better.  To see what we make on a day-to-day basis, see the Facebook CertainBass page.

Man on a mission:

Focusing primarily on the styling of Jazz basses made from 1961 to 1973 and Precision models from 1951 to 1967, I set out to provide a higher quality and truer-to-vintage bass than Fender does today at a lower price.  Make a spitting image vintage styled bass that we can modify and customize without feeling guilty we're ruining a vintage bass.  And, be playing a bass that keeps us from missing the feel of our favorite vintage bass.  The best fit and finish.  My proprietary clamping system provides a tighter neck to body joint and bridge to body joint resulting in maximum sustain.  My neck pockets are tighter, too, a neck does not effortlessy just slip in.  And we drill smaller screw holes as we don't like a screw to go in without a fight.  These techniques assures all CertainBasses sing.  Plus various Fender vintages have various errors we correct.  Examples:  veneer fake "fingerboards" the popular brand foolishly used from 1962 and into the 70's, and the longer G intonation screw on early 70's J basses to try correct improper bridge placement.  I use only thick slab fingerboards and put parts in the right place and correct a variety of errors committed by the cost cutting management of the CBS acquisition of Fender in the 60's.  All of my basses are 9 lbs or less, and we have a lightweight option for much less.  Our finishes are second to none whether you're restoring or using your imagination and do something that hasn't been done.  We can do anything.  Touching off each fresh build is the set-up by a 38 year veteran of the electric bass, me, David Certain.  And set-up is darn near everything.  If you watch a video of me playing, you will see I am demanding on a bass.  I play every note throughout a performance from top to bottom.  I make sure every note sings on every bass that walks out of here.  That's what makes me different from them.  I really play bass.  And I test all my products in the real life laboratory:  the gig.  I don't put anything on a bass I sell that I don't use on the basses I play.

"Please see my website to get to know me.  You'll find links to reviews of my basses as well as my bio and video and audio of me playing electric and acoustic basses.  Not one bad review, not even from some unreasonable sicko.  I set up every bass as if it's going to be mine.  And I always hate to part with them.  In fact, I don't part with it until I do hate to part with it.  I'm an incessant tweaker, and while the fresh build of your bass is settling in, I'm playing it and tweaking.  With your permission I'll take it to the gig for the ultimate test.

I'm also not opposed to discussing or answering any questions about bass things whether or not you buy from me as long as it gets you the bass you want.  I'm always glad to share what knowledge and experience I have.  My main purpose in life is to make the world a little better just because I'm in it.  It's an honor to play bass, teach bass, build basses and help fellow bassists.  Let's not take our musical gifts for granted; we are blessed to be able to do this whether for a living or not.  And the first order, it's all got to be fun!"  - David Certain

And here's an email from one of my customers:

"I started playing in 1965 with my first gig in 66. I used a sunburst bass that kind of looked like a Fender that I purchased from Lafayette Radio Electronics Catalog(ah, the old days) for $49. I used that bass until 1969 when my folks got me a brand new Sunburst P Bass with a maple board as a graduation present. I used her through the 70's untill being bitten by the "boutique" bug. I went though Alembics, Ken Smith, Steinberger, etc. until going back to Fender in the mid 90's. My 69 was long gone. I have been searching for that feel since then. YOU HAVE RE-CREATED MY BASS FOR ME! This instrument plays so sweet, sounds awesome and has the look and feel of my old friend."

Peace,

Roger

And here is another email I just got from another 40 year plus seasoned veteran bassist:

"This bass is amazing and I feel very lucky to have her.
Thanks again David for creating this fine instrument."

thanks,

Don

And one more:

You may get tired of all my mails but I had to share another quick P Bass story regarding my bass that you built. I had a studio gig last night- demo tracks for a "hopeful" young country singer. First off, the engineer was happy when I pulled out a P Bass. The beauty is that I ran straight to board and it took him less than a minute to dial in a round, fat sweet tone. The GHS precision Flats that I have her strung with compliment this instrument so well that it is scary. Needless to say, everyone was pleased. The signal was dead on with no "coloration". The engineer tried his best to talk me out of my bass so that he could have it for a "studio bass". NO CHANCE!
Once again, this is just another reason of my love for this instrument. I thank you again for building her for me.
All the best, Rick

Please note:  Fender is a trademark of the Fender Musical Instrument Company (FMIC).  This term as well as other trademarks are used in my listings for comparison only and to identify the parts I use in my products, and this is in accordance with eBay policy and trademark law.  FMIC claims a plethora of trademarks including the capital letter F (I'm just waiting for them to claim the trademark on the morning sunrise).  Do not confuse my basses with those made by Fender, my customers say mine are better instruments.  Fender makes some exceptional instruments today.  But, my basses are made by my hands as opposed to robots, and set up by a working, accomplished, professional bassist (me) as opposed to an hourly employee in a hurry like the questionable instruments you find in music stores.  My personal attachment to vintage Fenders is a combination of romance and investment.  I respect the current Fender Musical Instrument Company for attempting to continue Leo Fender's legacy; they are a very good American company.  I have loved and played Fender instruments for most of my life.  No one is more responsible for the sound and tone of American music than Leo Fender from his guitars, amps and basses to the Fender Rhodes electric piano sound still prevalent in the modern synthesizers of today.  There is at least a little Leo Fender design in every electric bass made.
