Exceptional collection of four Fender VI original bass guitars

Hi there,

I am selling my 'collection' of four original Fender VI bass guitars. No need to explain what exactly is a Fender VI as your are all experts in the field I guess. For all the others, here is some basic information :

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Bass_VI

https://www.vintageguitar.com/24459/25-most-valuable-basses/

It might be a crazy idea to sell them together instead of selling them separately, but I would be happy to transmit this small collection in its entirety. I have collected them over the past years and each of them has its 'history', and I am only selling them for health and financial reasons.

Unless otherwise stated they are all original, and each of them has its 'special features' : custom color, year of production,...

Please remind that « due to Fender’s modular production methods and often non-sequential serial numbering (usually overlapping two to four years from the early days of Fender to the mid-1980s), dating by serial number is not always precisely definitive ». So the LPB bass VI you will find below has a serial number which seems to indicate 1965 as year of production but it is without any doubt a pre-CBS bass from 1963-64.

You may also know that « given the modular nature of Fender production techniques, an individual neck may have been produced in a given year, then stored for a period of time before being paired with a body to create a complete guitar, perhaps, for example, in the following year ». So don't be surprised to see a CAR bass VI with a 1962 neck and a 1964 serial number !

Here we are :

1. 1961 Sunburst (pre-CBS)

A very rare sunburst bass VI from the very first year of production. It's heavily worn but I think that there are very few examples of this 'premature' basses. As some of you might know, Fender hadn't found an appropriate name for their new model in 1961, that's why the « VI » is missing on the headstock of the very early basses. A true rarity !!

Neck date : October 1961 (hand-written as usual before 1962)

    Stackpole date : 35th week of 1961

    Serial number 70246

The bass has been refretted and the nut has been replaced but the original parts are provided

Four of the saddles have been replaced

One screw seems to be newer than the others

The original tremolo arm is quite corroded so I provide another one which is in fine condition, and which is from the 1960ies (bought separately on ebay a few years ago). I also provide the original one of course.

2. 1962-64 Candy Apple Red (Pre-CBS)

Amazing bass VI in Candy Apple Red custom color with matching headstock. Excellent condition in spite of the various 'dings' you will discover on the pictures.

    Neck date : August 1962

    Stackpole date : 10th week of 1964

    Serial Number : L31925

3. 1963-64 Lake Placid Blue (Pre-CBS)

I don't know how many Lake Placid Blue basses VI have been produced, but they are EXTREMELY rare and this is one of them... It had been in quite worn condition when I bought it (see the two pictures with the color codes) and I decided to have it restored by one of the very rare specialists of vintage objects of the 1960ies : https://fr.linkedin.com/in/julia-becker-64281344.

She completed the lacks (less than 5% of the whole surface) of the original finish with fillings and reintegrations based on a scientific analysis of the original Fender nitrocellulose lacquer. The fragile parts of the original lacquer have been refixed. The color of the fillings is very close to the original color even if some differences can occur depending on the viewing angle.

Please note that this restoring intervention is reversible, for those who would like to get back to the 'original' worn state (the fillings can be removed by a restorer).

    Neck date : May 1963

    Stackpole date : 20th week of 1964

    Serial Number : L61006

4. 1970 Black (CBS)

Although it is not a pre-CBS bass, I am a huge fan of this one. Its original black polyurethane lacquer is simply gorgeous, especially with its white pick guard. Some (amateur) repairs especially on the back side of the body. Try to find a original bass VI with these features... just impossible !

    Neck date : illegible

    Stackpole date : 51st week of 1970

    Serial Number : 346160

The Fender mute was lacking when I bought the bass, so I purchased another original Fender mute separately on ebay.

Please note that I exchanged the pick guards of the CAR and the LPB basses. In fact, the pick guard of the CAR bass had very slightly yellowed (normal given its age), and I found that this was less perceptible on the LPB « background » than on the CAR. But this is a completely subjective appreciation and you can feel free to re-exchange them again !

Each bass will be packed individually in a hard case (two of them are Fender hard cases for VI basses but they are not original) and send together with FedEX, UPS or DHL, as you prefer. Worldwide shipping (the costs will depend on the way you want them to be shipped).
