Item & Condition

For your consideration today is a very cool Fender Precision Bass—with original 1973-74 serial neck!  This original C-shape, B-width neck has emerged through the decades with several major changes, discussed below.  This is a player’s guitar; she’s built to perform and bursting with raw, lively physical characteristics, authentic vintage beauty, and bona-fide history.

Weighing in at 8.96 lbs. fully-strung, this apple axe has been completely and fully set-up in July 2015 by the experts at Eric’s Guitar Shop in Los Angeles.  Not a collector’s piece per se, this is a clean four-string and a born performer.  Electronics are solid.  Professionally intonated and adjusted, the neck is dead set, and immaculately alignned.  Fast, low action at 3/32-5/64ths.  Tuners hold their positions well.  All of the electrics have been inspected and we can say with the utmost confidence that it is ready to give a showstopping performance—tonight.

An american classic—nice RW fretboard on this one.  This Fender has been circling the Hollywood/Los Angeles music scene its whole life, and the body has aquired some interesting signatures that can only be seen when you remove the neck (see pic).  She has been spending her days basking in the warm, temperate Southern California air.  There is no OHSC but a nice clean hardshell latching case will be provided for shipping purposes.

We strive to provide an accurate representation, but mistakes can happen--if you spot any details herein that don't add up, let us know and we will correct or clarify for you.  To bring this guitar to life—and for your viewing pleasure—many shots and angles are included below.  Of course, we are happy to take additional shots for you or provide more details, so just ask!  We stand behind our classic guitars, and stake a reputation by them in fact.  There is a full return policy in place for your protection; we aren't happy until you are completely satisfied with your purchase.

This is a guitar has a custom assembly, but you’d have to look closely to notice.  Certainly it is built to rock solid.  The previous owner may well have been a session player and active rock’n’roll musician throughout the 70’s and 80’s and this was one of his instruments fine-tuned with that in mind.   We’ve got Seymour Duncan quarter pounders and they just crunch, with output measured at 11.65Ω they sound just tremendous.  Punch, full with exceptional tonality, just a nice fat sound and terrific mids.  They’re not for everyone but for some they’re a first contender, especially if you’re just need as much output as you can get.

The V043xxx neck plate conforms to a vintage series guitar, and may be original to the body, which also seems to be a vintage re-issue or custom shop body.  The tuners are not original but are genuine Fender, closely conforming to the 1973-era style and type.  We do know that at one point there were different tuners installed; holes were drilled and can be spotted just below the replacements (see the area around the lower left screw).  There are two pin holes on the guitar’s base, and one pin installed; we are not positive which is the original but the unused hole has the symmetry to be it.  The nut has a few chips but is in perfect working order.  The headstock has general edge wear as well as a crack, seen just above the G-string tuner, extending to the top.  It looks to have been professionally repaired years ago, and is nothing more than a cosmetic flaw at this point.  Also on the headstock side are two pea-sized holes that have been filled in with a hardened material resembling wood.  Details on the nature of this repair are not known to us at this time.  The pickguard is period correct but not original, it appears in many pictures to have a greenish tinge but actually is closer to the cream-white tone seen in certain other close-ups.

The fretboard is oiled and clean, a real treasure with 20 smooth and level frets that all very much appear to be the originals (see close-ups).  The neck is slick and smooth, with many light surface indentations, and a small rough spot right around the 8th fret.  Nothing to cause any distraction while playing.  The lacquer on the wood has worn down in areas, particularly lengthwise near the fretboard and most noticeably in the area around the base, much of the gloss has turned to a dull wood finish.

On the body there are around a dozen small nicks on the guitar face, sides, and back, most around the size of a sharpie tip.  Some of these nicks show a black layer underneath, nothing really runs all the way down to the wood.  Just below the bridge plate there is an area of scuffing where the glossy Candy Apple Red paint has a bit of a dulled appearance.  Just around the top strap pin, there is some minor paint chipping.  On the guitar back, it is a nice appearance with light buckle rash in the form of light indentations, and general scuffs and scratches are present as well.

The guitar is not a young blood but will lay out the soul crunching grooves with Cherry spirit.  Precision twang with some great grunt from those pickups.  Seeing is believing but hearing is being born again.  Don’t pass this one up, don’t put this one down, it’s got real heart.  Any questions just ask, and thanks for checking out our other rare guitars!
