Ovation “Applause” AA-31 Guitar

This is a sweet old Applause made by Ovation.  It has a steel reinforced neck with side dots and rosewood fretboard and was made in Korea in the early to mid-1980’s.  The exact date is unknown.  Apparently, imported Ovation guitars were not held to a rigid serial number system.  Ovation Fan Club posts say the Korean AA-31’s were made starting in 1983, so this low number (028108) was likely from the first or second year … ’83 to ’85.

There are some signs of wear but relatively few since it sat damaged for many years in a closet before I acquired it.  There are some dings, a few surface scratches, and several finish cracks near the base of the neck that are visible but have no effect on tone, volume or strength of the guitar.  The neck joint was professionally repaired and aligned (see photos) and a fret job and setup giving it perfect intonation all the way up the neck.  Action is excellent with no buzzing on any fret and it plays great with a set of new Martin medium gauge strings.  If you prefer “light gauge,” then playability would be even gentler … though I like the clarity and projection of “mediums.”  The strap seen in the photos is not included.
