Quartersawn Black Locust Dreadnought Guitar Set Tonewood Rosewood Substitute

Up for auction is a quartersawn Jumbo/Dreadnought size guitar back and side set of Black Locust (Robinia Pseudoacacia) This particular set shows 2 knots within the pattern as photographed.

Black Locust is one of our favorite tonewoods, and my personal preferred BRW substitute--I don't make that comparison often!

The following is a quote from good friend and world-renowned luthier, John Arnold:

I have built two black locust guitars, and IMHO they are among the best sounding I have made. I call it 'rosewood light' which tends to suit my ear.

I have used locust in my building for over 30 years. It is one of the stiffest domestic woods, and works well for upper transverse braces, back braces, bridgeplates, and for neck reinforcements. I also used it for one bridge, which I dyed black.

And another quote from a separate conversation:

I have built two BL guitars, and both were as good as any I have made. The wood is plain, but it does have a lot of luster, meaning that it stains well. I used walnut stain those two guitars, but I prefer the golden brown that the wood eventually attains through natural oxidation.
It is difficult to get QS backs because the trees are relatively short-lived. The larger logs I have acquired generally have heart defects, particularly heart rot and ant colonies.
It is an excellent material for bridgeplates, because it has the stiffness and hardness of a rosewood, but less weight.
On occasion, I have used BL for back braces and the upper transverse brace. It is extremely stiff and very stable. Those are the reasons I like it for structural elements. I even used it for the triangular neck reinforcement on my oak Norman Blake Special (12-fret dread). That neck has moved very little since 1994.
If I were to do laminated braces (ala Larson), BL would be my first choice for the center laminations.
