Photos shown were taken before set-up & re-stringing carried out. I also currently have for sale a vintage 1970s MIJ Antoria Folk D-35/D-45! If this may be of interest, please get in touch.

Although my main interest is in Vintage guitars, I am also very partial to more recently made guitars which retain very traditional and iconic styling, and amongst the contemporary makers, I am a fan of Tanglewoods generally, particularly these earlier, more Martin-inspired Dreadnoughts, before they first introduced more Taylor-esque bridge & scratchplate styling, and I suppose the nearest traditionally-styled guitar in their current range would be the Sundance Historic series TW40 D AN. As this one is now around 20 years old, I suppose that "Mature" would be a better description for it.

PREVIOUS SALES:  I have sold a number of examples the older Tanglewwood dreadnoughts, including the "Herringbone" TW600, and also it's successor the TW900, and TW12 & TW15 models, because I think that they are such great guitars. On the last TW600 I sold in 2013 the buyer's feedback was "Magnificent guitar", and on an earlier TW600 sale the buyer's comment was "Great guitar great to do business with". Believe it or not the same buyer also then bought a TW900, and that time said - "brilliant guitar, great doing business with you again. thanks a lot".

DESCRIPTION.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Stock Number: VTG1499.

There is no indication of the exact age of this particular guitar, but the previous owner's recollection was that he bought it new between 1992 & 1995, and as indicated below it did appear in the Tanglewood 1996 catalogue. That information was obtained courtesy of the very helpful Dan Reeks at Tanglewood & this is his reply:-

"Hi Bob,
Looks like  "Natural" 28 guitar - see attached catalogue page from 1996. The catalogue shows no plate but I think that this is the model.
Best Regards, Dan Reeks
EMC / Tanglewood Guitars"

THIS THEN IS THE EXTRACT FROM THE 1996 EDITION OF THE TANGLEWOOD CATALOGUE, WHICH IS IMAGE No.8 IN THE EMBEDDED PHOTOS, AND KINDLY SUPPLIED TO ME BY TANGLEWOOD GUITARS, FROM THEIR ARCHIVE RECORDS.....

"The TANGLEWOOD PERFORMER range of guitars are amongst the world's finest guitars.

For many years this has been the Tanglewood vision. The meticulous workmanship of our top craftsmen turn fine materials into works of art. We only use the highest quality hand-selected aged woods and precious materials such pearl, abalone and other exotic wood trims.

This combination ensures a guitar of the highest quality which will be cherished by future generations and improve with age.

TANGLEWOOD guitars. A sound investment for years to come.

"Natural" (Model on left of Catalogue illustration) * Solid Cedar Top * Mahogany Back and Sides * Maple Body Bindings * Detailed Wood Body Inlays."

- They don't really mention the Marquetry purfling to the Maple edged bindings....nor the Body is single Maple bound to the back with matching marquetry centre stripe to the book matched Mahogany back & matching end stripe....nor the unusual and very distinctive inlaid marquetry Soundhole ring, or the quality enclosed Grover-style kidney bean tuners!.........Real Quality Appointments!

The nice Rosewood Fingerboard has black binding and do inlay position markers. The distinctive kidney bean buttoned tuners are mounted on the very attractively Rosewood faced headstock. The really smart, Martin style Rosewood bridge has an intonated saddle. The guitar is fitted with cream/black dot end pin, and black front strap button mounted on the Maple heal-capping. The whole guitar has a superbly preserved semi-matt/silk finish, with really minimal wear as described under "Condition" heading below.

The photos of the guitar are also available on the Vintage & Traditional Guitars website, or I can email them to you on request to [email protected]

PRICE.                                                                                                                                  £299.00.

______________________________________________________________________________

I invariably offer my guitars on a "Buy it Now" basis, corresponding to the pricing on my Vintage & Traditional Guitars website, and I don't usually use eBay's ".....or Best Offer" as my prices are always based on the prices I have already achieved for comparable guitars, and I find that eBay encourages buyers to go for the "super-bargain", beyond all reality, whereas my prices reflect the often many hours of workshop time and skilled professional restoration which have gone into the guitar you buy.....very different from many guitars you will see, no doubt of similar type, sold "as-is", or by non-professional sellers, where a cheap buy turns into an expensive repair session with the luthier....I've already done that for you!

That is not to say that the prices are set in stone.....my overriding aim is to restore guitars to excellent playing condition, to put into the hands of those with the playing skills I so often admire, but fail to emulate....there are many good customers of mine who will testify to the fact that I am a soft touch for a good player who wants to haggle! I'm not super-keen on part-exchanges, but will do them if the circumstances are right, but I can usually find some discount margin for a cash buyer!

CONDITION.

_____________________________________________________________________________

The condition of the guitar is really excellent - a couple of very small indent marks on the top are just abut all you can find - really quite remarkable for a 20 year old guitar, and as near mint as you could reasonably expect for a guitar this age, that has not been in it's case the whole time. The fact that, on the contrary, the guitar has been played, is evidenced by typical mild play wear scratches on the scratchplate, which is also very slightly lifted at the back...maybe it has been re-glued a little previously... but not evident enough to need to attend to it now.

Only slight play wear can be seen to the frets and nice Rosewood fingerboard. The individual chrome machine heads with distinctive kidney bean buttons look like new, remaining bright and working very smoothly.

ACTION, STRINGS & CASES.

_______________________________________________________________________________

It plays beautifully, with approx. 42.5mm. nut width, slim feeling, fairly shallow "C" profile neck, and a big strong Dreadnought sound from the maturing of the guitar. Setup is yet to be completed but action already fine....expecting to be around 2.5mm./3mm. when small trussrod adjustment completed. Scale length is a Martin "D" style 25.4"/642mm. It will be strung with a set of Martin Bronze Light 12-54s.

There is no case included, but I have some padded gigbags, or if you are looking for a hardshell case, offering greater protection, I may be able to lay hands on a virtually unused Hiscox Liteflite hardshell case, and I will be happy to discuss with you a combined price for the guitar and case.

YOUTUBE.

_____________________________________________________________________________________

I haven't been able to locate a YouTube clip of a '90s "Natural" Series guitar, so the following link is to a clip of what appears to be the nearest equivalent, in terms of general vibe, from the current Tanglewood range, a TW40-D-AN-E Electro Acoustic, demoed by DV247 TV, although the electro is plugged in, it is also recorded acoustically through a mic:-

The next link is to another YouTube clip...a short extract of "She Moved Through the Fair" recorded by "gamanil"....apparently on a Tanglewwod TW15, but just because I like it:-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tM3_m2gVUck

....and the third a clip by "Christopher Freedom" called Guitar Groove on his Tanglewood TW900 via a Fishman Matrix 1 pickup with effects, but sounding good:-

DELIVERY AND CONTACT.

_____________________________________________________________________________________

*** Subsidised Parcelforce Express 24 Postage & Packing to U.K. Addresses, or similarly subsidised Parcelforce Euro Priority service to European Addresses! ***

________________________________________________________________________________________

eBay now charge sellers 10% Fees on the amount you pay towards the sellers postage costs!

This is entirely unfair to sellers like me, who have always subsidised the postage cost, by charging less than the cost to them and not making any charge for packing time and material costs, which are both considerable when it comes to packing items which are large, fragile, and require great care, like guitars! When challenged they can only make the excuse that some buyers have complained that that some sellers are abusing the arrangements and over-charging on postage.....but not this seller!!

Buyers will be cheered to hear that eBay's advice to sellers on this point is that, as they are going to pay fees on both the selling price and postage costs, they should offer free postage & packing, and "increase the price to the seller to reflect their additional resulting costs".

Let us be entirely clear..........the only beneficiary of this policy is eBay's bottom line profits! I have sold on eBay for a long time now, and like to continue to sell to those many members who use eBay as their primary buying search, and although I restore & sell guitars primarily as an interest, I cannot do it at a loss, but the high eBay costs make it increasingly difficult, and having established my own Vintage & Traditional Guitars website around 18 months ago, I now sell the majority of my guitars there.

I continue to subsidise the postage cost to the buyer, and in the effort to comply with eBay's pressure for sellers to provide free postage, I have offered this, but have reverted to quoting minimal/subsidised postage charges, with no charge for packing time & materials, as I feel that experienced buyers appreciate that there is considerable cost/effort involved in the safe and secure postal delivery of large and fragile items like guitars, and are prepared to pay modest costs, whereas inclusive postage prices deter buyers who would be happy to travel & collect.

Similarly, I will not be participating in upcoming eBay schemes, including "Click & Collect", "Managed Returns" & "Global Shipping Program", as these are not suitable for guitar sales, and not compatible with my level of personal service, which you can assess for yourself from the high-quality & wholly positive feedback I have received over several years.

______________________________________________________________________________________________

I will be very happy if you are able to come and try out the guitar, and of course, following purchase, you are welcome to come and collect in person. Otherwise I will pack well and securely box the guitar and post it to you as soon as possible. If you would prefer I may be able to arrange to deliver or meet part way to hand over, dependent on a reasonable distance, for a similar cost to postage.

Thank you for looking, and please take a look at the other guitars in my eBay Shop. In addition I do have a stock of other guitars, which is added to regularly, but some of them do take a little time to find their way through my workshop, so if you don't see what you are looking for at present, please let me have details - who knows I may have just what you are looking for!

If you need any further information or advice, please contact me via eBay Messaging, my direct email address as included in my eBay Business Seller contact details, phone me on 01543 677140, or via my mobile number 07970 832955, and I will do my best to answer any questions. Please take a look at the other guitars in my eBay Shop, but if you don't see what you are looking for, I do have a stock of other guitars, some still in the course of preparation for sale, so please let me have details - who knows I may have just what you are looking for!

EU Buyers please contact me before purchase to confirm shipping arrangements and delivery costs. The European Postage cost shown in the listing is approximate and for general guidance only. The actual cost of postage to Europe will vary from Country to Country, but you should allow extra cost for the purchase of a case to put it in for shipment.
