Vanden “Martin Taylor Artistry” Archtop Jazz Guitar

This (almost) unique guitar was built to order in March 2003.

Mike Vanden has long been associated with the design and building of high quality archtop musical instruments. Martin Taylor is an internationally acclaimed jazz guitarist, acknowledged as “one of the best”. Together they designed this “Martin Taylor Artistry” guitar which became one of Martin’s main musical instruments for over a decade.

This guitar is in near perfect condition and has most recently been set up by Mike Vanden himself at his workshop in Scotland, using the same strings that Martin himself favours – Elixir Nanoweb 12-52’s. The soundboard is European Spruce. The back, sides and neck are European Maple. Highly figured Maple is used throughout, including the one piece neck which is reinforced with carbon fibre. The fretboard, pickguard, engraved pickup casing, bridge and tailpiece are Ebony.

There is the usual fine attention to detail, which is characteristic of Vanden instruments and includes opulent features such as a “Vanden Logo” mother of pearl peghead inlay, a Black Tahiti Pearl truss rod cover and gold Gotoh 510 machineheads.

Despite being one of the lightest of archtop guitars at approximately 2 kg (less than 4¹/₂ lbs), the acoustic sound is well balanced and warm, with plenty of volume. It is fitted with the Mimesis Jazz Blend pre-amp to mix the suspended Mimesis magnetic Humbucker and a DPA cardioid mic, all fitted underneath the pickguard – giving a fantastic system for live gigs and recording.

This guitar lives in the “Rolls Royce” of guitar cases – a Calton case, in a “smoke-free” humidity-controlled home and is in excellent condition with very little play wear.
