1960 Silvertone Stratotone Mars H46 Model 1420 by Harmony Vintage Guitar w/osc

Up for sale, a 1960 Silvertone Stratotone Mars Model 1420 in excellent condition and in perfect working order. This fully hollow and early Harmony model has the same body and neck as the more common H49 Stratotone Jupiter, yet the Mars boasts a pair of "Hershey Bar" pickups (like the highly sought after H44 model). Crafted by Harmony in the USA, this unique version of the H46 Stratotone Mars was made exclusively for the Sears company, under their house brand, "Silvertone." The tone is very sweet and balanced, with great clarity on complex chord voicings and a roundness and complexity to the sound of lead lines. The bridge pickup can snap and twang with the best without being brittle or thin, and the neck pickup has absolutely huge low end, especially when you roll off the tone control, without sacrificing note definition. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar and strung with fresh 10-46 strings, this Stratotone Mars is a great example of this classic Silvertone model.

The neck has a chunky C profile, with generous shoulders that are well rounded and fill the palm very comfortably. The neck depth and 1 11/16" nut width will be familiar to any lover of 1950's Cibsons and the original fretwire is intact. The slender frets have been leveled and crowned in their lifetime, currently only showing faint wear in the first position, with virtually no fretwear up the neck. On the headstock, the original bone nut is intact, and the stock Waverly tuning machines turn smoothly with stock white buttons. The "Silvertone" silkscreen on the face of the headstock is also clean and intact.

All of the electronics work as they should, and all original hardware is present, including the top hat switch tip (same exact part as an early Telecaster), brown cupcake knobs, carved Brazilian rosewood floating bridge, and chrome trapeze tailpiece. The matte black nitro lacquer finish is rich and unfaded, accented by lightly aged white binding on the top and back. The bridge pickup is original, with a 1960 date stamp, while the neck pickup is an era-correct vintage replacement that dates to late 1961. The wiring harness is original and complete with four CentraLab pots that date to the 45th week of 1959.
Cosmetically, this is an honestly played example, with a bit of light buckle rash on the back, and a few small nicks on the body and back of the neck profile, but nothing that affects playability in the slightest. There is also light wear along the headstock edges and near the rear strap button, as well as a slender repaired vertical crack on the back running 1 1/2" near the strap button.
This vintage USA made 1960 Silvertone Stratotone Mars 1420 model has been setup, restrung, and is ready to be played!
A vintage Harmony chipboard case is included. The case is slightly larger than the instrument (mostly in terms of depth), but has the correct blue interior and gray exterior for this model.
