1960s Harmony Stella Vintage Parlor Guitar X Braced Restoration Sunburst w/ Case
Up for sale, a 1960's Harmony Stella parlor acoustic guitar in exceptional condition. This guitar has received a thorough, ground up rebuild, a process which has become quite popular for vintage Harmony acoustics of all sizes due to the resonant, full, and powerful tones that one can eek out of these great USA made guitars. This Stella has been completely rebraced, now boasting X bracing instead of ladder bracing, and the floating bridge has been replaced with a traditional glued-on carved rosewood bridge for optimal resonance and tone. The guitar has also been completely refinished in a vibrant matte three-tone sunburst finish.
It's surprising how much tone and volume this parlor guitar can produce, and it's a great folk strummer that has a boxy quality that sits well in a mix and cuts through in a frequency range that's distinct from a dreadnought, making it a great tool when layering multiple acoustic guitars on a track. There's a crisp, strident quality to the sound as well, and the percussive cut and low end kick of the instrument makes it wholly unique among vintage acoustic guitars. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar and strung with 12-53 bronze strings, this Stella is a ton of fun to play and has comfortable action.
The neck has a full baseball bat chunky C shaped profile that fills the palm and chords easily, even for smaller hands. The guitar features 12 frets to the body, with 19 frets total on the dyed maple fretboard. The original slender "banjo" brass fretwire is intact, and the frets have well rounded crowns with plenty of height and barely a hint of wear. The scale length is 24 1/4" and the nut measures just a hair over 1 3/4" in width. Both the nut and saddle are hand carved from bone, and further increase the resonance and clarity of the guitar's tone. On the headstock, the original open back tuners are intact with stock cream buttons. These tuners work surprisingly well, turning smoothly and holding pitch as they should.
On the body, the new rosewood bridge is expertly carved and sits flush with the top, which is also quite flat, with virtually no deflection or string pull behind the bridge. The compensated bone saddle has ample height for future adjustment as well. Above the hole for the endpin, the three tiny nail holes that secured the original trapeze tailpiece can still faintly be seen, but this is just about the only pre-upgrade/restoration evidence on the instrument. The three-tone sunburst finish has a stately matte appearance and shows no notable wear aside from a few extremely minor nicks that were probably present prior to the refinish and just register now as tiny imperfections in an otherwise smooth and consistent nitro lacquer finish.
This guitar has received extensive upgrades and restoration work rarely seen on an instrument of this size/value, and the end result is an infinitely playable parlor instrument which has a powerful tone that's primed to be your secret weapon in the studio.
A new Gator hardshell case is included.
