Up for sale, a 1962 Fender Jaguar in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. This rare, Pre-CBS first year example has all of the early features of this model, including flat pole piece black bobbin pickups, a nitrate tortoise pickguard, and clay dots on the fingerboard! With a highly figured maple neck and vibrant and unfaded three-tone sunburst finish, this guitar embodies golden era Fender quality, and will satisfy serious players and discerning collectors alike.

One of the most striking features of this Jag is the neck profile, which has a bit more depth and thickness than most and gives the guitar a very substantial feel. There's an unmistakable acoustic resonance and clarity with this Jaguar, and the warmth and string to string balance of the acoustic signal translates well through the pickups. The top of the line Fender model when introduced in '62, the Jaguar has a particularly wide range of tones available to the player, while living up to its reputation of being able to out-twang a Tele and deliver sparkling, glassy cleans like no other Fender can!

The earliest incarnation of the Jaguar (from 1962-mid '63) had the flat pole piece pickups seen here, generally with a slightly hotter wind than the later staggered pickups, and this pair delivers a sound that is much bigger than you expect from a Jag. Of course, the Jaguar offers tonal options to both thicken up the sound and alternately make it even more sinewy and thin. The "strangle" toggle (located on the hexagonal plate next to the individual pickup on/off switches) gives the guitar a treble heavy snap, while the Rhythm Circuit (located on the guitar's lower horn) is a separate circuit for the neck pickup, engaging a darker tone cap. The Rhythm Circuit provides one of the best sounds on this guitar, with a thicker, wooly tone that still has plenty of clarity, while adding warmth to your clean signal as well as giving an overdriven tube amp or your favorite fuzz pedal that little bit of extra low end push to make single note lines stand out. This Jag weighs in at 8lbs 6oz and has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, with 11-50 strings, solid intonation, and comfortable action.

The neck has a quintessential late '62 profile, with a bit more heft in the shoulders than later necks, and a medium C shape near the nut that fills out with great chunk and depth by the time you reach the 9th fret. The gloss nitro lacquer finish is extremely smooth and shows sparingly little wear on the entire profile. The particular cut of maple used on this neck is gorgeous, with a prominent grain pattern in addition to scattered quilt and birdseye figuring on the entire profile. The Brazilian rosewood veneer fretboard has clay dot inlays and the original frets, which have been recently leveled and crowned, providing a very pleasant and consistent playing experience. The frets currently show only faint wear beneath the plain strings in the first position and there's a surprising amount of fret life left in the instrument, which plays cleanly up the neck with no buzzing or dead spots. The neck has the Jaguar's signature 24" scale, with a 7 1/4" fretboard radius and traditional Fender "B" nut width of 1 5/8". The original Kluson Deluxe single line tuning machines are intact on the headstock, and these tuners turn smoothly and hold pitch as they should with particularly clean chrome plating on the gear housings and buttons. The "Fender Jaguar" waterslide decal is in mint condition, with plenty of gold flake still present in the Fender name, and bold, crisp edges on that decal and the separate "Offset Countour Body" decal further up the headstock. On the heel of the neck, the original factory date stamp is clean and present, noting a November, 1962 date for the neck, as well as the Jaguar's model code ("1", given that in '62 the Jag was the newest and most expensive Fender model), and the B nut width. The fully finished neck pocket is also one of the last to show this feature before Fender changed their finishing processes with the "paint stick" method that would be used across the board by the following year. 

All of the electronics work as they should, and the pair of original black bobbin Jaguar pickups compliment each other well, with strong output and original winds on both pickups. The original switches are present in the lead circuit, hexagonal control plate, and the Stackpole pots date to the 32nd week of 1962. The pots and switch in the Rhythm Circuit are original as well. The routes on the body are untouched and original with stock shielding plates on both the body cavities and the underside of the pickguard.

The original hardware on the body is completely intact and in fantastic shape, with clean chrome plating on the stock bridge base, mute, vibrato unit, control plates, and neck plate. The foam on the mute is new, and the mute still pivots up and functions well. The vibrato unit engages very smoothly and responds to the lightest touch, giving the player the ability to do subtle trills, surfy bends, and deeper dives with ease. The vibrato retains its original spring and arm, which locks in securely. In the vibrato unit route, the original grease pencil "11/62" body date is intact as well. The tortoise nitrate pickguard provides the perfect contrast to the Sunburst finish, and this pickguard alone is extremely valuable and clean, sitting particularly flat on the body with zero warping or shrinkage. The pickguard also has the shade of "tomato soup" tort seen on the earliest Pre-CBS instruments upon the material's introduction in '59, with prominent yellow swirls.

In terms of cosmetic wear, this is a lovely example with a completely unfaded and notably vibrant three color sunburst nitro lacquer finish. The deep red ring in the middle of the burst is very rich, and the color transitions to a deep, blackish-brown on the edges of the offset body. The chrome control plates have great shine, and there's only a touch of patina on the bridge base. The neck profile is glossy and smooth, with only one small scratch behind the 8th fret that doesn't affect playability in the slightest. There is moderate lacquer checking across the entire body, running both horizontally and vertically, and this checking is exclusive to the body, with none on the neck. There are various small dings and finish chips along the edges of the body, most prominent south of the input jack on the side, on the edge of the top adjacent to the rear strap peg, and where the forearm crosses the top. There is also a somewhat unusual and circular wear pattern on the top north of the vibrato unit, likely caused by a bracelet or some piece of jewelry on the wrist of a previous owner, as the area of wear sits squarely where a wrist would rotate while picking. Additionally, there are a few small nicks and finish scratches on the back, but sparingly little buckle rash.

The original brown tolex hardshell case with brown leather ends is included. This case is in fantastic shape and all three working latches are intact, along with a clean brown leather handle, and orange interior.
