CertainBass Elita Model One

Custom Built Just for You

More Features, More Craftsmanship than the Leading Brand at a Better Price

First, get to know me a little.  I want to show you that as a bassist myself, I am very demanding on a bass.  Please take a look:    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-y5SDZVcVQ    I play darn near every note on a bass throughout a performance so I make sure every note on all the basses that come out of here plays well.  I make every bass as if it's going to be mine.  This is a higher standard than most bass makers most of who play very little if at all.  Please take a look at  CertainBass.com  to get to know me a little better.

The photos of guys playing basses are noted bassists who play CertainBass and nothing else.  The first is Mark Peterson playing his Candy Apple Red Model One with mother of pearl block inlaid and bound rosewood neck, Bartolini pickups, BadAss bridge, Hipshot Ultralite tuners and Varitone system.  Mark won a Grammy with Casandra Wilson, tours the world with Little Anthony and the Imperials, and most recently recorded on Bob James and Ben E. King's latest records with his CertainBasses only.  The next is George Potsos with his Moon Tan (a CertainBass custom color) Model One with mint green pickguard, maple neck with mother of pearl block inlays and binding, Fralin pickups, Fender threaded saddle bridge (Geo is old school all the way) and Schaller tuners.  And that's his backup.  His #1 is black on black with dots, a tribute to his own identical '64.  You'll catch George touring USA and the world with Devon Allman, Gregg Allman's son.  These are but a few of the CertainBassists out there tearing it up.  The last photo is me, David Certain, playing in 1972 at my first paying gig, my sister's wedding reception.  That was over forty years ago.  And I've had a Jazz style bass in my hands ever since.  I've played with Gary Bartz (Gary was with Miles for 8 years, longer than any other sax player that played with Miles other than Coltrane), Eddie Henderson, Terrence Blanchard, Robert Jr. Lockwood (step son and only student of Robert Johnson), Jimmy Scott, Jimmy McGriff and many others.  Anyway, we all play Model Ones, the top of the line CertainBass.  Not that I like name-dropping, but I just wanted you to know the caliber of quality CertainBass attains on a daily basis.  If you see a pro playing a CertainBass, rest assured he or she paid for it.  We don't give away basses for photo ops nor sponsor endorsees.  They pay for their CertainBasses, and they really play them.  These are real endorsements.   CertainBasses withstand the rigors of professional musicianship all bassists appreciate.

The Model One

With the vintage feel of an elderly Jazz bass, the Elita Model One is the Jazz style bass we make with all the bells and whistles.  For Jazz basses, I focus on the vintage styles made from 1961 to 1973 as the basis of the Model One.   Compare our features with what other leading brands are offering.

No compromises.  All the bells and whistles while still retaining vintage Fender integrity, feel and sound.

Solid as a rock, sings like a bird and plays like butter and pretty, too.

- Solid alder or ash body (other woods are available, just ask), Made in America, in any color or finish you want, nitro or poly with or without matching headstock.  From vintage restorative finishes to wild custom finishes like metal flakes or even flames.

- Just about any kind of neck you want.  Premium authentic vintage specification necks made, thick slab fingerboards, phillips truss rod adjustment at heel.  Comes with your choice of about any vintage style 20 fret neck you can imagine, 21 fret and others may be specified for some style necks:  rosewood fingerboard with block mother of pearl inlays and white binding, maple fingerboard with block mother of pearl inlays and white binding (like Marcus Miller's bass), maple fingerboard with black block binding and black binding (a la Geddy Lee), dot inlay necks with choice of inlays, "clay," mother of pearl black or white or abalone, with or without binding (we even do a dot inlay Jazz neck with binding like during the 1966 transition year from dots to blocks).  Or you can go fretless ebony fingerboard, no inlays, with or without fretlines and a rosewood defretted and coated dot inlay neck (we defret a fretted neck in order to acheive the Jaco neck).  Standard Jazz width at the nut is 1.5 inches.  You can have a Precision neck on it if you like, as well.  I do custom shaping, so we can execute any neck you want from the very, extremely skinny all the way up to baseball bat and everything in between.

- Your choice of pickguard, notched or un-notched for easy truss rod adjustmment access

- Varitone system.  The standard Model One controls are neck pickup volume/bridge pickup volume in concentric knobs/Varitone/choice of Varitone balance or master high-end roll-off (normal tone control).  Our Varitone is a six position rotary switch that replaces a standard bass tone control.  1st position is flat, wide open bass.  2, 3 and 4 are classic tones of Jaco and Jamerson, 5 is where the midrage dip and metallic sounds of Stanley and Marcus are, and position 6 mimics an out of phase pickup tone (and has the same effect on a P bass or other single pickup bass).  Unlike others, ours has quiet switching, a must for recording.  All this tone shaping and totally passive, no battery.  If the Varitone is not for you, we credit $100 for specifying standard Jazz volume/volume/tone.

- Includes choice of pickups:  Fender Custom Shop, Bartolini, DiMarzio and others (just ask).  I have my own pickups, too, which gets you a credit of $100

- Hand cut bone nut

- Left hand no extra charge.  Lefties are un-accomodated enough in every day life.

- Comes with your choice of Fender threaded saddle bridge with chrome pickup and bridge covers or Schaller bridge or BadAss bridge without covers.  $70 credit for choosing stock Fender bridge

- Your choice of Schaller or Fender tuners or any brand that fits the Fender standard hole.  $70 crediot for choosing standard, import tuners that turn smoothloy and hold tune, I use them myself.

- Your choice of strings (some models may cost extra such as Tomastik)

- Your choice of Schaller or Dunlop straplocks or nickel Fender strap buttons

- Hardshell case

- Standard on all CertainBasses are CTS pots, Switchcraft jack and vintage style cloth wiring.

Note:  Canada shipping is $78

Man on a mission:

Focusing primarily on the styling of Jazz basses made from 1961 to 1973 and Precision models from 1957 to 1967, I set out to provide a higher quality and truer-to-vintage bass than Fender does today at a lower price.  Make a spitting image vintage styled bass that we can modify and customize without feeling guilty we're ruining a vintage bass.  And, be playing a bass that keeps us from missing the feel of our favorite vintage bass.  The best fit and finish.  My proprietary clamping system provides a tighter neck to body joint and bridge to body joint resulting in maximum sustain.  My neck pockets are tighter, too, a neck does not effortlessy just slip in.  And we drill smaller screw holes as we don't like a screw to go in without a fight.  These techniques assures all CertainBasses sing.  Plus various Fender vintages have various errors we correct.  Examples:  veneer fake "fingerboards" the popular brand foolishly used from 1962 and into the 70's, and the longer G intonation screw on early 70's J basses to try correct improper bridge placement.  I use only thick slab fingerboards and put parts in the right place and correct a variety of errors committed by the cost cutting management of the CBS acquisition of Fender in the 60's.  All of my basses are 9 lbs or less, and we have a lightweight option for much less.  Our finishes are second to none whether you're restoring or using your imagination and do something that hasn't been done.  We can do anything.  Touching off each fresh build is the set-up by a 38 year veteran of the electric bass, me, David Certain.  And set-up is darn near everything.  If you watch a video of me playing, you will see I am demanding on a bass.  I play every note throughout a performance from top to bottom.  I make sure every note sings on every bass that walks out of here.  That's what makes me different from them.  I really play bass.  And I test all my products in the real life laboratory:  the gig.  I don't put anything on a bass I sell that I don't use on the basses I play.

"Please see my website to get to know me.  You'll find links to reviews of my basses as well as my bio and video and audio of me playing electric and acoustic basses.  Not one bad review, not even from some unreasonable sicko.  I set up every bass as if it's going to be mine.  And I always hate to part with them.  In fact, I don't part with it until I do hate to part with it.  I'm an incessant tweaker, and while the fresh build of your bass is settling in, I'm playing it and tweaking.  With your permission I'll take it to the gig for the ultimate test.

I'm also not opposed to discussing or answering any questions about bass things whether or not you buy from me as long as it gets you the bass you want.  I'm always glad to share what knowledge and experience I have.  My main purpose in life is to make the world a little better just because I'm in it.  It's an honor to play bass, teach bass, build basses and help fellow bassists.  Let's not take our musical gifts for granted; we are blessed to be able to do this whether for a living or not.  And the first order, it's all got to be fun!"  - David Certain

And here's an email from one of my customers:

"I started playing in 1965 with my first gig in 66. I used a sunburst bass that kind of looked like a Fender that I purchased from Lafayette Radio Electronics Catalog(ah, the old days) for $49. I used that bass until 1969 when my folks got me a brand new Sunburst P Bass with a maple board as a graduation present. I used her through the 70's untill being bitten by the "boutique" bug. I went though Alembics, Ken Smith, Steinberger, etc. until going back to Fender in the mid 90's. My 69 was long gone. I have been searching for that feel since then. YOU HAVE RE-CREATED MY BASS FOR ME! This instrument plays so sweet, sounds awesome and has the look and feel of my old friend."

Peace,

Roger

And here is another email I just got from another 40 year plus seasoned veteran bassist:

"This bass is amazing and I feel very lucky to have her.
Thanks again David for creating this fine instrument."

thanks,

Don

And one more:

You may get tired of all my mails but I had to share another quick P Bass story regarding my bass that you built. I had a studio gig last night- demo tracks for a "hopeful" young country singer. First off, the engineer was happy when I pulled out a P Bass. The beauty is that I ran straight to board and it took him less than a minute to dial in a round, fat sweet tone. The GHS precision Flats that I have her strung with compliment this instrument so well that it is scary. Needless to say, everyone was pleased. The signal was dead on with no "coloration". The engineer tried his best to talk me out of my bass so that he could have it for a "studio bass". NO CHANCE!
Once again, this is just another reason of my love for this instrument. I thank you again for building her for me.
All the best, Rick

Please note:  Fender is a trademark of the Fender Musical Instrument Company (FMIC).  This term as well as other trademarks are used in my listings for comparison only and to identify the parts I use in my products, and this is in accordance with eBay policy and trademark law.  FMIC claims a plethora of trademarks including the capital letter F (I'm just waiting for them to claim the trademark on the morning sunrise).  Do not confuse my basses with those made by Fender, my customers say mine are better instruments.  Fender makes some exceptional instruments today.  But, my basses are made by my hands as opposed to robots, and set up by a working, accomplished, professional bassist (me) as opposed to an hourly employee in a hurry like the questionable instruments you find in music stores.  My personal attachment to vintage Fenders is a combination of romance and investment.  I respect the current Fender Musical Instrument Company for attempting to continue Leo Fender's legacy; they are a very good American company.  I have loved and played Fender instruments for most of my life.  No one is more responsible for the sound and tone of American music than Leo Fender from his guitars, amps and basses to the Fender Rhodes electric piano sound still prevalent in the modern synthesizers of today.  There is at least a little Leo Fender design in every electric bass made.
