Acoustic Guitar Bridge

USA Luthier (ret.) Made

Gabon Ebony

Six-string Martin style, 2 1/4" string spacing.

I’ve retired from lutherie, but still like to putter around in the shop.  So I’m making bridges in small lots of twenty or so.  That’s enough to gain some efficiency on machine settings, but not so many as to drive me nuts with repetition.   All are made by me personally, using ordinary woodworking equipment.  No CNC, no computers, no automation, no robots, no employees.  Does this make them better?  I dunno.  It does introduce the small variation of form and dimension inherent in all hand-made items.  Some people think that’s a positive.  Some don’t.  You choose.  But I can tell you that I do indeed take pride in my work.

This one is African, or Gabon Ebony. It’s the real deal, although the totally black Ebony we used to get is probably a thing of the past.  Usually there are faint streaks of gray or brown, which I like to leave alone since they add to character.  Others may want to stain them out, which is easily done with dyes sold by both Stewmac and LMI. (Actually, these are nothing more or less than Fiebling's Black Leather dye which can be bought many places for about half of what the luthier suppliers charge.  So if you want to go that route…)  There’s nothing quite so classy as real Ebony.  And it’s a great wood to work as well.  You can leave it matte or, with something like Micro Mesh you can put a mirror-like polish on it.  Either way it’s gorgeous.  But expensive.  Sorry.

Apart from the string   spacing, the dimensions are virtually the same as Stewmac’s  standard Ebony bridge (4921), which they sell for $19.15 plus S&H.  I like to think mine are better than those  Stewmac sells; and I know for sure they are better than those you can get from the Far East.

This one also has a particular refinement I often build into my bridges:  the peg holes are in a gentle arc rather than a straight line.  That way, you don’t have six holes lining up through the long grain and inviting a longitudinal split.  (Any repair guy will tell you how often that’s a problem with the Martin-style bridge.)  There’s no effect on intonation, etc.  And it does look kind of cool.  Check out the picture.

Try it.  I think you’ll like it.  If not, send it back to me and I’ll cheerfully refund your money.
