If you are thinking about a purchase of a used vintage guitar you need to accept the fact that such guitars may have cosmetic flaws solely associated with their age, but not related to any particular damage. For example their finishes change their look over the years and are not glossy and crystal clear like on brand new guitar. In addition, such guitars may require fret dressing, new tuners, string action adjustment or a simple repair before they can be fully enjoyed. I see guitars as musical instruments, not as furniture. When I describe guitar as being in excellent condition I don't talk only about its cosmetics but mostly about its structural & functional condition, sound and playability. If you are seeking a perfect looking, low maintenance guitar you should abandon a thought about buying used vintage one, especially from me.

I don't offer "sound samples" because they never reflect true sound of a guitar as we hear it playing in our own room. You can greatly change tonality of any guitar by using different strings.

FERNANDES GC25

This guitar was made by Fernandes Co. sometime in early/mid 1970 ties. During this decade, knowing that most of their exported high grade guitars were simply too expensive for Japanese students, Japanese guitar makers, including Fernandes company, were building high quality guitars stripped of any unnecessary ornamental features in order to make them more affordable.

The person responsible for the production of classical guitars for Fernandes Co. during 1970s was Master Luthier Kazuo Toshi (alias Kazuo Ichyianagi), who left company in 1980 to start his own workshop. He has developed special wood treatment technique enhancing by 40% wood’s ability to vibrate. In the chemical process, treated with formaldehyde wood cells are bonded together much stronger than on untreated wood. This treated wood has commercial name of “Super Wood”.

Kazuo Toshi is today one of highest regarded luthiers in Japan and sells his guitars under nick name Kazuo Ichiyanagi at pretty high prices. His low end models are priced no less than $6000, while his top models $12000+. His is being helped by his son Kunihiko.

During Fernandes times his guitars were also highly regarded and also sold at quite high prices. Fernandes classical models GC50 and up were all-solid woods guitars used by many professional players.

This guitar was priced 25 000 yen in 1974, an equivelent to 30% of yearly salary of Japanese college graduate.

This guitar, despite its age survived in near mint condition. Besides couple of tiny dents is free any cosmetic flaws.

This guitar is really loud and produces sweet and clean notes, with strong and well resonating basses, with a good balance between high and low notes.

Specifications:

Top: High Grade Solid Spruce supported by the fan of 6 braces

Back and Sides: High Grade Rosewood Doubleplate

Calling this construction "laminates" would actually be very incorrect and quite misleading. This genuine Japanese invention has really nothing in common with modern era cheap particle-board laminates. This construction is nothing but 2 solid wood plates glued together, hence in fact nothing but reinforced solid woods. Such plates perform no different from solid woods, while don't crack as easily, are much easier to work with, and allow for much lower prices of these instruments. Such guitars have always been and still are a true blessing for all guitar enthusiasts with limited funds.

Neck: Mahogany

Fingerboard: Very well Ebonized Rosewood

Headstock with original Gold-plated Tuning Machines

Scale: 650 mm

Nut width: 52 mm

Action is set to: 3.5 mm under E6 and 3.00 under E1

This guitar will be shipped in used case of minimal value. You don’t pay for the case. You only pay for the guitar. Please consider this case as a free bonus and don’t expect too much. I will not accept any complaints regarding the condition of the case.

FERNANDES
Instruments currently produced in Japan, China, Korea, and Taiwan. Distributed by Fernandes Guitars/Kaysound Imports Inc. in Champlain, NY. Fernandes has been producing guitars since 1969.
In 1969, Fernandes Company Ltd. (based in Tokyo, Japan) was established to produce quality classical guitars at an affordable price. Over the next twenty years, Fernandes expanded the line and became one of the largest selling guitar manufacturers in the world. Fernandes is the number one selling guitar in Japan, and at times has held as much as 40% of the Japanese market.
In late 1992, Fernandes Company Ltd. began distributing their entire line of guitars to the U.S. market as Fernandes Guitars U.S.A., Inc. Fernandes Company Ltd. uses only the top facilities located in Japan, Taiwan, China, and Korea to produce their guitars. Once the factory is done manufacturing the guitars, they are shipped to the United States where they are inspected and set up again.
Even though Fernandes started out building classical guitars, by the time they were available in the U.S. they had stopped producing them. The first acoustic guitar to show up for Fernandes wasn't until 1997 with the FAA-500. This model evolved into the Reyna, while the Palisade series was introduced in 1999. Fernandes discontinued all acoustic guitars in 2004. In 2006, they reintroduced a small line of Palisade guitars. Up until 2006, Fernandes was distributed by Fernandes Guitars International Inc., in Chatsworth, CA and in 2007, Fernandes Guitars/Kaysound Imports Inc. became the exclusive distributor. Fernandes "Grand Concert" classical guitar    12:14 on Friday, April 15, 2005     0 votes

(CAY)

I bought it on eBay..
It looks like "Made in Japan" and I was told that it`s about 30 years old. Not sure if the Fernandes is the "Fernandes" which makes electric guitars. Has perfect finishing and details. Sound is bright and loud just like other Japan-made guitars (no problem to play in a concert hall with it!).
I would like to know if anyone saw this model before.

I bought it with $500USD in an auction. The low price is because few people have seen classical guitars from "Fernandes". However, it in fact sounds and plays like a concert level guitar! (I have a $2000USD guitar that sounds like a sick cat before this monster). The sound is so loud that my neighbors will hate me if I play those boring exercises on it after 10:00 PM!

 Returns

If you are not happy with your purchase you may return the guitar for a refund of a purchase price of a guitar.  The cost of shipping both ways will not be refunded.

All you need to do is to:

1.    Notify me within 5 days after delivery

2.    Pack guitar the same way I do it, using the same box and materials

3.    Ship it back to me within next 2 days

Another words I expect this “trail” period to occur within +/- 7 days. Naturally guitar has to be returned in the same condition as I ship it to you. This is simply honest offer for honest buyers. My goal is to make your purchase as risk free as possible. I know very well that spending $1000 of hard earned money is not emotionally easy undertaking for majority of guitar lovers. I am sure that reading my feedback can ease a bit your “purchase anxiety” but it still will be there no matter how hard I try.
