If you are thinking about a purchase of a used vintage guitar you need to accept the fact that such guitars may have cosmetic flaws solely associated with their age, but not related to any particular damage. For example their finishes change their look over the years and are not glossy and cristal clear like on brand new guitar. I see guitars as musical instruments, not a furniture. When I describe guitar as being in excellent condtion I don't talk only about its cosmetics but mostly about its structural & functional condition, sound and playbility. If you are seeking a perfect looking guitar you should abandon a thought about buying a used vintage one, especially from me.

Yukio Niwa Model 15 Class 1A

This guitar was made in 1980 by luthier Yukio Niwa.

Yukio started his career in guitar making at Masaru Kohno workshop in early 1970s. After few years he moved and worked at Saburo Nogami workshop. Saburo Nogami, first ever Masaru Kohno’s apprentice, was a friend with Kazuo Yairi and frequently worked as Master Luthier and supervisor at Kazuo’s Guitar Factory located in Jifu, Japan. Thanks to these connections Yukio Niwa in late 1970s took a long term position of a Master Luthier at Kazuo Yairi’s factory. While working for Kazuo, Yukio was also making guitars with his own label. This is one of them.

It is not difficult to imagine that after being thought by 3 Japanese elite luthiers Yukio was capable of creating very high grade instruments. What he couldn’t do in 1980, was to price his guitars at the same level as his powerful mentors and other major players within Japanese guitar making industry. The same exactly grade guitar sold by Yukio for 150 000, with Kohno label inside would be labelled as model 30 and sold for 300 000. Yamaha Corp. would label it as GC20 and sell for 200 000 yen.

It is also worth to mention that in 1980 many younger luthiers who were entering the market had to sell similar grade guitars for 100 000. Another words their labels were totally free.

Yukio Niwa still makes guitars working at his own workshop. His least expensive models with Indian Rosewood b/s are priced 400 000 yen, while any models made with solid Brazilian Rosewood b/c are sold for no less than 900 000 yen. These are actually regular prices used by all other established Japanese luthiers.

This particular guitar is a high grade concert instrument that matches quality of much higher priced instruments made by more famous luthiers. It truly sounds like top Masaru Kohno models. It only lacks appropriate ornamental extras and famous label ... and (good news) appropriate price.

This guitar has exceptional response, great volume, superb note clarity & separation, uniquely seducing tonality, fantastic sustain. It is very lyrical and hard to put down guitar. With quite slim neck and current action it is super easy to play.

Despite its age of 35, this guitar remains in overall excellent cosmetic and perfect functional condition. One its top there are only few very small and shallow dents, few super minor rubbing marks on the back, couple of very small dents on the back of the neck.

Dalbergia nigra

Dalbergia nigra, commonly known as the Bahia RosewoodJacarandá da BahiaBrazilian RosewoodRio Rosewood,Jacarandá De BrasilPianowoodCaviuna, or Obuina, is a species of legume in the Fabaceae family.

Brazilian Rosewood, also called Jacaranda de Brasil includes several subspecies and varieties of trees that produce very high density wood, known for its superb tonal properties. Plates of wood cut from Jacaranda trees can have different looks, from colorful wavy or blotchy patterns to straight grain patterns, from very dark ones to lighter in color. Due to the 1968 ban on harvesting Jacaranda in the Jungles of Amazon, many other “not-banned” tree species (like Honduran Rosewood) producing wood of similar tonal properties were identified and used in guitar making. These trees (woods) are commonly called New Jacaranda or Latin America Rosewood. Currently these Amazonian woods are also quite hard to acquire and became very expensive. Therefore luthiers around the world are making their top models using Madagascar Rosewood, known to have very similar to Jacaranda tonal properties. Guitars made with Brazilian Rosewood are super-expensive, easily reaching $10 000 - $20 000 level.

Guitar Salon International (Santa Monica, CA) sells Masaki Sakurai Model PC & Sakurai Maestro RF for $9,500. GSI sells Sakurai-Kohno Professional J model for $6500.00, which in Japan is priced 460 000 yen. KOHNO MAESTRO model in Japan is priced 1 200 000 yen. You can estimate yourself what would be the price of this model at GSI. Not long ago top Yamaha model GC82 with Brazilian Rosewood b/s was priced 1 800 000 yen. Today Yamaha GC82 with Madagascar Rosewood b/s is retailed at $9.999 in US and about $12,500 in Europe.

Prices for similar quality guitars made by Spanish or other well known European luthiers reach much higher level. AT GSI this very often $18,000+.

Returns

If you are not happy with your purchase you may return the guitar for a refund of a purchase price of a guitar.  The cost of shipping both ways will not be refunded.

All you need to do is to:

1.    Notify me within 5 days after delivery

2.    Pack guitar the same way I do it, using the same box and materials

Another words I expect this “trail” period to occur within +/- 7 days. Naturally guitar has to be returned in the same condition as I ship it to you. This is simply honest offer for honest buyers. My goal is to make your purchase as risk free as possible. I know very well that spending $1000 of hard earned money is not emotionally easy undertaking for majority of guitar lovers. I am sure that reading my feedback can ease a bit your “purchase anxiety” but it still will be there no matter how hard I try.
