*** Project Guitar - "As-Is" for Restoration by Skilled Repairer. ***

________________________________________________________________________________________

This is one of the versions of their "Grand Concert" family of models, which Harmony made for Montgomery Ward stores, for their Airline brand....essentially the same guitar as the H162 above, but this time with all solid Birch construction, natural colour top and stained back & sides. I have had the guitar in my store for some time, but have many other restorations of my own in addition to restorations of customer's guitars, and not enough workshop time, so have not got around to working on it. I thought that it would appeal to someone looking for a project....not because it would not be a worthwhile project for me, but just that it is not getting done.

I am currently going through my guitar store, and likely to be offering other project guitars in the near future.

*** THIS GUITAR IS A REPAIR AND RESTORATION PROJECT, SOLD "AS-IS", WHICH IS SUITABLE FOR A BUYER WITH THE SKILLS NEEDED. PLEASE CHECK THE DESCRIPTION AND VIEW THE FULL RANGE OF ADDITIONAL PHOTOS, IN ORDER TO BE FULLY AWARE OF IT'S CONDITION, ASK ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE BEFORE PURCHASE, AND I WILL BE HAPPY TO HELP. ***

Many of the restored Harmony, Stella & other vintage guitars I sell are now "pre-sold" through the VTG website.....their restoration is completed for a particular buyer, who has enquired from seeing details of previous sales etc.

Please get in touch if you are looking for a similar guitar....I have a good stock coming through the workshop!

This Listing is for the one Harmony Airline H7078 guitar only but, as mentioned above, I have other "Project Guitars", also from the same maker, and a Stella H331 Mandolin available currently and I am happy to negotiate a combined price for all or any combination of these. Not to say that I don't see these guitars as worthwhile projects for me to repair myself, but just that I have too many to get through or to store, and I need to prioritise my time, efforts and available space._______________________________________________________________________________________PROJECT GUITAR - HARMONY AIRLINE H7078 FOR RESTORATION._______________________________________________________________________________________This is an All Solid Birch construction version of the template Harmony H162 "Grand Concert" model guitar....which was in production continuously from 1940 to 1971, with only one early change in body-shape, and a few minor changes in cosmetics over those 30+ years. I have no information on the production run dates of this H7078, but it was made by Harmony in Chicago for the Montgomery Ward Airline brand.I think that you will agree that the photos show that this remains a handsome, characterful Stella-type guitar...just like an oversize Stella H927 parlor!...which, in the right hands, is still capable of being restored to an excellent, and characterful, acoustic blues guitar. I have restored many of them, and I regularly sell them now, fully professionally restored, at around £429 or £459.The usual Harmony internal ink date stamp is not visible, but the styling/fittings of the guitar, particularly the fact that there are clear signs that the tuner posts had original ferrules/bushings, and Harmony did not fit these on many models until the end of the '60s, suggest that it would be from the late-'60s..Collection, enabling the buyer to inspect and satisfy himself on condition and viability, before payment, is obviously the best option, but I will accept purchase and post as usual, provided that the buyer confirms that they are entirely confident that they have the skills to undertake the repairs and restoration work needed, and will not be seeking to return the guitar. Needless to say, please do ask any questions you may have before purchase.
There is no full details page for the H7078 on the Harmony Guitars Database, just a photo page on this link:-http://harmony.demont.net/search.php_________________________________________________________________________________________CONDITION._________________________________________________________________________________________Please carefully check out the photos, which can now be fully displayed on eBay, but if it will help, these can be emailed to you - please [email protected] - this guitar is sold "As-Is" - purely as a restoration project or similar, without any warranty regarding condition or suitability.I think that you will agree that the photos show that this remains a handsome, characterful Stella-type guitar....just like an oversize Stella H927 parlor!....essentially original, the body & neck are complete, but there are no tuning machines. The missing items are regularly seen available on eBay, at relatively modest prices + shipping, particularly from a number of USA sellers. The main issues noted are as follows, but this should not be regarded as an exhaustive list:-The original thin brass frets show a little wear, whereas the dyed Maple fingerboard, with painted on, stencilled, position markers, shows no real sign of play wear. The fingerboard appears has a modest amount of relief up to the body join, but then rises a little, as so many older guitars do. Clearly a neck reset will be required if it is necessary to significantly change the neck angle, but if you consider that a satisfactory action can be achieved for your playing, the alternative of re-levelling the fingerboard may be an option.I have re-levelled may of these fingerboards. Harmony dyed Maple fingerboards are of two types, either surface stained, in which case colour is not retained and re-colouring is required after sanding, or pressure dyed, in which case satisfactory colour remains. Either way, if you choose this option, you will need to install new dot inlay position markers, as the original painted ones will be lost, in addition to re-fretting.The original nut is still there, but not sure quite how, as it is in two displaced pieces, with a further chunk missing and a new nut will need to be sourced and fitted. The tuning machines are missing and an original replacement set or new repro set will have to be sourced & fitted. The original dyed Maple pin-bridge is appears fully attached, complete with the two bridge bolts, which are original, factory fitted, and the original fretwire saddle. There is no obvious sign that the bridge has been re-fitted since it left the factory, but although Harmony used All Solid Timbers and good fittings on their guitars, their mass-production processes did suffer from one or two blindspots. One of these was the fitting of bridges, where often inadequate amount of glue was applied and usually there was a failure to remove finish under the bridge, and bridge positioning was sometimes not entirely accurate, so be aware that these matters should be checked to confirm whether the bridge may need to be re-fitted, or even slightly re-positioned for accurate intonation. Plastic bridge pins are included, but they are a bit gnarly & you might prefer to fit new....they were left out so that you can see that the bridge pin holes are also a bit ragged and will require tidying up at least. The finish is original, and generally well-worn, but on the whole what you would expect for a near 50 year old blues acoustic...with wear, chipping & some local finish loss, particularly to the painted on bindings. Original tortoiseshell pickguard is also intact, securely fitted, with some play wear as you would expect. There are no significant cracks visible in top, back & sides, and no visible signs of seam separations, neither does external inspection suggest any obvious concern about the security of internal braces, although naturally this can only be confirmed by internal inspection. If, rather than carry out your own restoration of the guitar, you would like me to restore this guitar for you on a "pre-order" basis, please do get in touch to discuss that possible option.__________________________________________________________________________________________ACTION, STRINGS & CASES.__________________________________________________________________________________________The action cannot be assessed in the present condition of the guitar, and the restoration will need to be correctly completed to give the appropriate action set-up. Buyer will need to fit new strings, and the guitar comes without any case included.__________________________________________________________________________________________YOUTUBE.__________________________________________________________________________________________________There are a number of YouTube demo clips of Harmony OM/Grand Concert size guitars....I can send some links, if needed on request.______________________________________________________________________________________________________DELIVERY AND CONTACT.__________________________________________________________________________________________*** Subsidised Parcelforce Express 24 Postage & Packing to U.K. Addresses ***__________________________________________________________________________________________eBay now charge sellers 10% Fees on the amount you pay towards the sellers postage costs! This is entirely unfair to sellers like me, who have always subsidised the postage cost, by charging less than the cost to them and not making any charge for packing time and material costs, which are both considerable when it comes to packing items which are large, fragile, and require great care, like guitars! When challenged they can only make the excuse that some buyers have complained that that some sellers are abusing the arrangements and over-charging on postage.....but not this seller!!Buyers will be cheered to hear that eBay's advice to sellers on this point is that, as they are going to pay fees on both the selling price and postage costs, they should offer free postage & packing, and "increase the price to the seller to reflect their additional resulting costs".Let us be entirely clear..........the only beneficiary of this policy is eBay's bottom line profits! I have sold on eBay for a long time now, and like to continue to sell to those many members who use eBay as their primary buying search, and although I restore & sell guitars primarily as an interest, I cannot do it at a loss, but the high eBay costs make it increasingly difficult, and having established my own Vintage & Traditional Guitars website around 18 months ago, I now sell the majority of my guitars there.I continue to subsidise the postage cost to the buyer, and in the effort to comply with eBay's pressure for sellers to provide free postage, I have offered this, but have reverted to quoting minimal/subsidised postage charges, with no charge for packing time & materials, as I feel that experienced buyers appreciate that there is considerable cost/effort involved in the safe and secure postal delivery of large and fragile items like guitars, and are prepared to pay modest costs, whereas inclusive postage prices deter buyers who would be happy to travel & collect.Similarly, I will not be participating in upcoming eBay schemes, including "Click & Collect", "Managed Returns" & "Global Shipping Program", as these are not suitable for guitar sales, and not compatible with my level of personal service, which you can assess for yourself from the high-quality & wholly positive feedback I have received over several years.______________________________________________________________________________________________Collection in person, enabling the buyer o inspect and satisfy himself regarding condition and his capacity to complete the repairs needed is obviously the best option, but I will pack & post to the buyer, provided he is confident that he understands the repairs needed and has the skills needed to complete the work required.I will be very happy if you are able to come and try out the guitar, and of course, following purchase, you are welcome to come and collect in person. Otherwise I will pack well and securely box the guitar and post it to you as soon as possible. If you would prefer I may be able to arrange to deliver or meet part way to hand over, dependent on a reasonable distance, for a similar cost to postage.Thank you for looking, and please take a look at the other guitars in my eBay Shop. In addition I do have a stock of other guitars, which is added to regularly, but some of them do take a little time to find their way through my workshop, so if you don't see what you are looking for at present, please let me have details - who knows I may have just what you are looking for!If you need any further information or assistance, please contact me via eBay Messaging, my direct email address as included in my eBay Business Seller contact details, or phone me on 01543 677140. If no immediate response, I may be contactable on my mobile number 07970 832955.________________________________________________________________________________________FEEDBACK AND TESTIMONIALS.________________________________________________________________________________________*** Private Sale/Restoration Feedback. ***David Bristow, well-known, Midlands-based Bluesman - one of many complimentary feedback comments from David in relation to the Stella H929TG Tenor Guitar I restored and sold to him a few months ago, which he is now gigging - see David's Youtube live gig clips - "I struggle to understand why these wonderful little instruments are not more widely known"...............and, "Lovely little guitar, with a great sound."Also a some time ago, an International Star Singer (and it proved no mean Guitarist!), and household name since the 1980s, came here to try out two Stella type guitars, a Stella H927 and a Silvertone H604, couldn't decide between them..........so he bought them both! Actions speak louder than words! The result is the following testimonial received from Rick:-"Bob is very knowledgeable and is a pleasure to deal with. I bought a 1963 Stella and a 1966 Silvertone from Bob a while back and love them both.Rick Astley"*** eBay and Other Feedback. ***Amongst the many examples of Classical guitars, together with my other speciality, of Harmony made Stella Guitars, together with those identical guitars which Harmony made made for the big Store and Mail Order Brands, such as Silvertone for Sears, and Airline for Montgomery Wards, that I have sold over the last 4 years or so, the buyer's invariably complimentary feedback is there to be seen in my Feedback History! Just a few examples:-

"Totally brill, highly recommended" - Richard Hawley, Guitarist, Singer-Songwriter and Producer, Sheffield. - August, 2012. ( Harmony Stella H929TG Tenor Guitar).

"Have not been able to stop playing such an amazing guitar" - Matt Bennett, Guitarist/Singer/Songwriter, The Musgraves, Wolverhampton - January, 2013. ( Ramirez Studio Classical Guitar).

"I just love playing the tenor" - David Bristow, Bluesman, Guitarist/Singer/Songwriter - www.bristowblues.co.uk - February, 2012. (Harmony Stella H929TG Tenor Guitar).

"I am well pleased with the Stella" - Perry Foster, Bluesman, Guitarist/Singer - "Big Daddy of British Blues"; "The Old Maestro" - www.perryfoster.co.uk - August, 2012. ( Repairs on Stella Guitar, and other guitar sales).__________________________________________________________________________________________OTHER GUITARS.__________________________________________________________________________________________I have a stock of guitars, which is added to regularly, but some do tend to take a little time to find their way through my workshop. Some of these, together with details of many Classical Guitars, as well as of the Stella, Harmony, Kay and other guitars I have sold recently, are available on my website - Vintage & Traditional Guitars, but if you don't see the guitar you are looking for, please enquire [email protected] - who knows I may have just the one you want!__________________________________________________________________________________________
